Fencing Heads Crosstown for Elite Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - After a three-week break from competition, the Temple fencing team returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 17, taking part in the Elite Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania. Competition commences at 8:30 a.m., with a dual match against Cornell. The Owls will also take on Northwestern, Air Force, Columbia, and Stanford throughout the day.
LAST TIME OUT
Temple opened its 2024-25 season by hosting the 44th Annual Coach Nikki Franke Classic on October 26 at the Liacouras Center. The Owls earned six top 15 finishes, as well as medals from Constanca Dimas (foil) and Grace Smith (epee). Additionally, all 14 TU fencers advanced into the elimination round of the event.
FOIL
The first discipline of the day featured the foilists, where Temple displayed an impressive outing. None more impressive than Constanca Dimas, who defeated three opponents in bracket play before bowing out in a close semifinal, 14-13. This run earned Dimas a third-place medal, which was the first medal of her collegiate career.
EPEE
Following strong performances by the foilists, TU's epeeists also delivered excellent results. Victoria Doroshkevich and Grace Smith each won four out of five bouts, while the trio of Auprell Edwards, Caira Blake and Anne-Mai Melles also made strong contributions. Smith led with an eighth-place finish, defeating opponents from Wagner, Boston College and Sacred Heart before falling in the final rounds.
SABRE
Temple's Alexandra Papapetropoulou and Eva Ventura both earned top 15 finishes in the sabre event, finishing 12th and 14th respectively. A freshman, Papapetropoulou has made the elimination round in all three of her first collegiate tournaments, with the result at the Nikki Franke Classic being her highest finish of the three.

The Temple fencers will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday, Dec. 8 for the Tradition Meet hosted by Vassar College.
