Women's Basketball Falls on the Road to Georgetown

WASHINGTON DC - Women's basketball battled with Georgetown in a 65-51 loss Tuesday night. Anissa Rivera had her second straight double-double this season with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The difference between the teams came from three-point range as the Owls went 1-16 while Georgetown went 6-16 - a 15-point difference in a 14-point game.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
First Quarter

  • The Owls scored first winning the tip and spent the game's first two minutes exchanging two-point buckets to make the score 4-4. Both teams then were charged with shooting fouls and each side made one of two to make it 5-5 at the 6:35 mark.
  • Two made jump shots by Georgetown over the next two minutes gave the Hoyas a four-point advantage, 9-5, by the frist media timeout at 3:50.
  • Baskets by Tiarra East and Anissa Rivera to tie the score at 9-9 preceded a timeout by Georgetown at 2:16.
  • Two free throws by Ariel Jenkins and another by Kelsey Ransom gave the Hoyas a three-point lead 12-9 heading into the final minute of the quarter.
  • East made a jumper but Ransom closed out the quarter with four points as the Hoyas led 16-11.
  • Jaleesa Molina and Kaylah Turner ended the first quarter with two fouls a piece
Second Quarter
  • Georgetown opened with a made three-pointer but Temple responded with four points to make it 19-15.
  • The Hoyas extended their lead to eight points, 23-15, but Temple tallied the next four points to make the score 23-19 at the 4:53 media timeout.
  • A seven-point run at the end of the quarter gave Georgetown an 11-point lead, 30-19.
  • Ransom (6) and Rivera (6) scored 12 of the Hoyas 14 points in the stanza.
  • East (2-12), Tarriyonna Gary (0-5), and Rivera (2-8), Temple's leading scorers entering the game, were a combined 4-25 in the first half.
Third Quarter
  • Tristen Taylor opened the second half with a layup at the 9:12 mark ending a six-minute scoring drought for the Owls. 
  • Four free throws for Temple gave them a six-point run, the longest for the Owls thus far.
  • A bucket and free throw by Ransom at 6:08 gave Georgetown its first points of the second half and ended the Owls' run making the score 33-25.
  • Another three-point play by Ransom at 5:42 put the Hoyas back up by 11, 36-25.
  • Both teams went nearly two-minutes without scoring before East made two free throws at 3:32, that cut the Hoyas' lead to 36-29.
  • A six-point run by Georgetown highlighted by a three from Ransom boosted the Hoyas lead to 13, 42-29.
  • Georgetown built a 13-point lead by the end of the third quarter, 46-33, on the strength of Ransom's 12 third quarter points.
Fourth Quarter 
  • Rivera made a field goal at the 8:47 mark, ending a 6:44 drought between field goals for Temple.
  • Georgetown followed with three three-pointers, extending their lead to 57-35 with 6:58 remaining.
  • At the 5:01 media timeout, Temple chipped at the lead trailing 60-41. Rivera made the Owls first three-pointer after starting the game 0-14 from beyond the arc.
  • Temple outscored Georgetown down the stretch to cut the final margin to 14 points with the game ending 65-51.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Anissa Rivera started in her first game as an Owl, scoring the Owls first bucket and getting the first rebound. 
  • Rivera scored four of the 11 points for the Owls and had five rebounds playing all 10 minutes of the first quarter. 
  • Savannah Curry scored on a layup at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter for her first collegiate points. Curry finished the game with 12 points.
  • The Owls out rebounded the Hoyas in the first half (23-21), nine came from Rivera.
  • Temple had four steals in the first half scoring four points off of turnovers. 
  • The Owls shot 8-34 (24.0%) from the field in the first half, including 0-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Adena Webster scored her first collegiate points after drawing the contact and being sent to the line making one of two free throws.  
  • Tristen Taylor had a season-high seven points against the Hoyas.

UP NEXT
The Owls return to the Liacouras Center on Saturday, November 23, to face Drexel in a Big 5 matchup. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
