Women's Basketball Wins Big 5 Opener Against Drexel

PHILADELPHIA- Temple women's basketball (3-2, 0-0 AAC), in its first Big 5 matchup this season, defeated Drexel (2-2, 0-0 Colonial Athletic) 52-43 in front of 1,435 at the Liacouras Center.
Temple erased an early 12-point deficit, battling back behind timely offense and team defense. Tiarra East (15) and Anissa Rivera (12) scored in double digits; East dominated in the third quarter to get the Owls back in the game, and Rivera dominated the final period to put the game away. For Drexel, Deja Evans led all scorers but defended better in the second half after scoring 12 of her 18 points before the break.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Tiarra East got the Owls on the scoreboard first with a layup at the 7:57 mark. A pair of quick jump shots by Drexel propelled a 9-0 run and turned the score into the Dragons' favor 9-2 by the first media timeout at 4:43.
- Drexel extended its run to 14 points before East finally ended the Owls' drought with a jumper at the 2:17 mark (14-4 Drexel).
- From there, the two teams exchanged buckets, ending the quarter with Drexel ahead, 18-9.
- Temple was 3-19 (15.8%) shooting in the first quarter, while Drexel was 7-15 (46.7%) from the field.
Second Quarter
- Drexel's Deja Evans, who scored 8 points in the first quarter, reached double-digits by the 8:17 mark with the first points of the second period (Drexel up 20-9).
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Tarriyonna Gary, along with a layup from Adena Webster, cut the Drexel lead to three points, 20-17.
- Drexel responded with a five-point run of their own to push its lead back up to eight, 25-17.
- Freshman Savannah Curry made her first career three-pointer to end Drexel's run.
- A layup at the buzzer by Temple's Felicia Jacobs ended the half with Drexel holding on to a five-point lead, 27-22.
- While Temple nearly doubled its shooting in the second quarter (5-18, 27.8%), Drexel's dropped in half (4-17, 23.5%). Temple also went 3-6 from three, while the Dragons were 0-4.
Third Quarter
- Tristen Taylor scored the first points in the second half at the 8:57 mark, cutting the margin to three. Drexel made a foul shot, and the two teams exchanged buckets before. East made a layup on a fast break and sank her foul shot to bring the Owls within one, 30-29.
- Evans once again stifled Temple's momentum with a layup before the 4:54 media timeout (Drexel 32-29).
- East took matters into her own hands with a jumper, a steal, and a layup at 3:01, giving Temple its first lead, 33-32, since the game's first bucket.
- Two free throws from Anissa Rivera and a three-pointer by Drexel's Grace O'Neill closed out the scoring in the third quarter tying the game at 35-35.
Fourth Quarter
- A steal and a layup by Rivera gave the Owls an advantage, 37-35, 11 seconds into the final frame. Rivera's six points in the first 90 seconds of the 4th quarter gave Temple its biggest lead of the game, 41-37.
- All eight of Temple points in the 4th quarter's, before the first media timeout at 5:27 were scored by Rivera as the Owls held a 43-39 advantage.
- Coming out of the break, Temple's Amaya Oliver scored on a layup but once again, Drexel went to Evans to end Temple's momentum. (Temple 45-41).
- Rivera (2), Taylor (1), and Esat (2) helped Temple push its lead to nine (50-41) with 1:46 remaining.
- Temple closed out the game 52-43 to secure its first Big 5 win.
IN THE BOX SCORE
- The Owls had four steals in the first quarter, two from Tarriyonna Gary and two from Anissa Rivera.
- Temple had 12 offensive rebounds in the first half with 10 points in the paint.
- The Owls shot 50% (3-6) from three in the second quarter. Two came from Gary who has 133 made three pointers in her collegiate career, moving up to number seven in Temple history.
- TU had seven bench points in the first half, three coming from Curry.
- The Owls shot 38.5% (5-13) in the third quarter, taking the lead 33-32 with 3:01 remaining.
- Rivera shot 5-5 (10 points) in the fourth quarter and had two steals.
- Temple outrebounded Drexel 42-38, six coming from Amaya Oliver and Rivera.
- Temple held Drexel to under ten points for three quarters.
