Women's Basketball's Fourth-Quarter Push Comes Up Short in 62-57 Loss to Princeton

PHILADELPHIA- Temple women's basketball (3-3, 0-0 AAC) lost to Princeton (5-2, 0-0 Ivy League) 62-57 in front of 1,063 at the Liacouras Center. Temples had 28 bench points, led by Kaylah Turner with a season-high 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field. The Owls outscored the Tigers 21-11 in the fourth quarter, coming back from an 18-point deficit as late as the third.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Princeton won the tip and scored on its first possession.
  • Following a three-point basket by Princeton, Tristen Taylor opened up Temple's scoring with a three of her own to cut the lead to 5-3.
  • The Tigers went on a 4-0 run before the first media timeout (Princeton 9-3).
  • After seven-straight Princeton points, Jaleesa Molina drove to the basket for two to end the Tigers run, 12-5.
  • The Tigers ended the quarter with a nine-point lead, 16-7.
  • The Owls went 3-14 in the first quarter shooting just 21%. 
Second Quarter
  • Once again Anissa Rivera injected some offense into the Owls' lineup scoring five of the team's first 10 points. (Princeton 18-10).
  • Kaylah Turner hit a pair of jumpers to cut the Tigers eight-point lead in half, 18-14.
  • After the Owls got within three, Princeton built back up to a five-point lead, 22-17 at the 3:44 media timeout.
  • A 7-0 run in the next minute extended the Tigers lead to 12 (29-17).
  • Princeton added a three-pointer and closed out the half with a 15-point advantage, 32-17.
Third Quarter
  • Princeton opened the half with a quick three-pointer but Temple responded with two twos by Molina and Tarriyonna Gary (Princeton 35-21).
  • Both teams exchanged buckets leading to the 4:22 media timeout with Princeton ahead by 16, 41-25.
  • Three threes - one from Rivera and two from Turner - helped the Owls shave the deficit to 11 by the 1:21 media timeout (Princeton 47-36).
  • Two buckets by Princeton to end the quarter gave Princeton a 15-point advantage at the break, 51-36.
  • Temple used 13 bench points in the third quarter to trim the lead. Turner (6), Rivera (3), and Keilan Cedano (4).
Fourth Quarter
  • A layup by Turner and a three from Tiarra East cut the lead to 10, 51-41.
  • East heated up, scoring nine points (her first field goals of the game) in the opening four minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to single-digits, 55-47.
  • Both teams played tight defense throughout the quarter.
  • At the 1:48 mark, East sank a three that came with a foul. Rivera sank one, and Temple was within five, 59-54.
  • Turner dropped a three-pointer to bring the Owls within two and 53.9 to play, 59-57.
  • A steal on the inbound pass by Taylor gave Temple the ball following a timeout at 47.5. Two missed shots by Rivera gave Princeton the ball with 28.6 on the clock.
  • Temple put Princeton on the foul line where they converted on two shots, 61-57.
  • Two missed threes and a foul put Princeton back on the foul line where they made one, 62-57, with 10.2 remaining.
  • A Temple foul gave Princeton the ball back and they ran out the clock.
IN THE BOX SCORE
  • Temple had eight rebounds in the first quarter, three coming from Jaleesa Molina.
  • In the first half, Temple had nine bench points. Anissa Rivera and Tristen Taylor led the Owls in scoring with five and played over 10 minutes.
  • In the first half the Owls shot 7-29 from the field and 2-6 from behind the arc. The Tigers shot 13-29 and 4-6, putting the Owls in a 15-point deficit. 
  • The Owls had six steals in the first half, three from Tristen Taylor.
  • Princeton outrebounded Temple 22-14 in the first 20 minutes. 
  • The Owls scored 17 points in the first half - their lowest total since 1/17/23 vs Tulsa. 
  • After having one second chance shot in the first half Temple grabbed offensive boards generating 10 second chance points. 
  • Kelian Cedano had her first collegiate steal and assist (2) in the third quarter. She also had a season-high four points. 
  • Kaylah Turner had a season-high 15 points shooting two back-to-back threes in the third quarter cutting the Owls deficit to 11. 
  • Temple shot 38.1% from the field in the third quarter and 75% from three. 
  • The Owls forced the Tigers to five turnovers in the fourth quarter and scored four points off them. 
  • The Owls outscored the Tigers 21 to 12 in the fourth quarter. 
UP NEXT
The Owls head to La Salle on Sunday, December 1, for their second Big 5 game of the year. Tip-off is set for 2 PM. Temple defeated Drexel, so a victory would give the Owls a spot in the Big 5 Classic's Championship Game scheduled for Friday, December 6, at the Pavillion on Villanova's campus.
