Men’s Soccer Clinches AAC Championship Spot with 1-0 Win Over Tulsa

11.1.24 | Men's Soccer

Temple men's soccer defeated Tulsa on the road Friday night, 1-0, to clinch a spot in the AAC Championship. Andrew Kempe was a force in goal, recording his fourth clean sheet of the season with five saves, as a goal in the 47th minute sealed the deal for the Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Temple's backline was firm, denying multiple Tulsa opportunities through the first 15 minutes.
  • Kempe set the tone early with two saves in the first 25 minutes.
  • After a drawn penalty from Nathan Brown, the Owls struck first off a deflection from a Lukas Egarter free kick.
  • TU's offense stayed aggressive, with shots from Rocco Haeufgloeckner, Elias Betancourt and George Medill between the 59th and 62nd minutes.
  • Kempe hauled in impressive back-to-back saves in the 66th and 68th minutes.
  • Reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week, Kemali Green, and the Temple backline again held strong, allowing zero shots between the 71st to 78th minutes despite three Tulsa corner kicks.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kempe finished the regular season with six goals allowed—the lowest mark from an Owl with at least three starts since Dan Scheck in the 2012 season.
  • Tonight's match marked the fifth consecutive game in which the Owls haven't recorded a loss. This is their longest streak without a setback since 2019.
  • Haeufgloeckner's two shots on goal set a career-high. He previously recorded two shots in two matches last season against Stony Brook and SMU.
  • Temple closed its regular season with three road wins against Akron, UAB and Tulsa tonight. This is their best mark on the road since 2020-21.
  • The Owls finished their in-conference schedule allowing the second-fewest goals with four.
  • Flannan Riley and Andrew Kempe have been strong in goal all season, as the Owls lead the conference with a save percentage of .857.
UP NEXT
With the win, the Owls have clinched a spot in the AAC Championship for the first time since 2020-21. TU's seeding in the tournament will be dependent on the result of FAU's match against Charlotte on Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. The AAC Men's Soccer Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 8.
