Football Falls to UTSA on the Road

11.22.24 | Football

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Temple Owls (3-8, 2-5) fell to the UTSA Roadrunners (6-5, 4-3), 51-27. The Roadrunners' 530 total yards, including 310 on the ground, propelled UTSA over Temple in the Owls' final road game of the season.

UTSA's Owen McCown threw for an impressive 20-27 for 220 passing yards and one touchdown. However, Dante Wright was a bright spot for the Owls, recording two touchdowns and 128 receiving yards.

How it Happened
  • UTSA opened the scoring on its opening possession of the game, capped off by a 40-yard touchdown run by RB Robert Henry Jr. This gave the Roadrunners a 7-0 lead with 10:47 left in the first quarter.
  • After a muffed punt set up Temple on the UTSA 41-yard line, the Owls settled for a 37-yard FG from Maddux Trujillo. This made the score 7-3 Roadrunners with 6:08 to play in the first quarter.
  • UTSA took a two-possession lead when QB Owen McCown rushed for a 75-yard touchdown to give the Roadrunners a 14-3 advantage with 10:54 left in the first half.
  • With UTSA deep in Temple territory, LB D.J. Woodbury intercepted McCown and ran the ball 42 yards to the Roadrunners 45-yard line. The Owls took advantage of the interception, as QB Evan Simon found WR Dante Wright in the endzone for a nine-yard touchdown. This cut into the Roadrunners lead to make the score 14-10 with 4:40 left in the second quarter.
  • On the ensuing play, UTSA returner Chris Carpenter took the kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, allowing the Roadrunners to reclaim a 21-10 with 4:24 remaining in the first half.
  • UTSA extended its lead a few minutes later when Henry Jr. reached the end zone for the second time. The 8-yard rush made the score 28-10 in favor of UTSA with 1:57 left in the half.
  • The Owls continued to fight back however, as they went 75 yards in just over a minute, with RB Antwain Littleton scoring on a rush from four yards out. This cut the UTSA lead to 28-17 with 27 seconds left until the halftime break.
  • After a failed onside kick from Temple to open the second half, UTSA marched all the way to the Owls' one-yard line. However, the Temple defense held, forcing a 23-yard FG from the Roadrunners. This pushed the score to 31-17 UTSA with 11:58 left in the third quarter.
  • Simon completed a deep ball to Dante Wright, who beat his man in single coverage. The single-digit receiver did the rest, taking it into the endzone for a 61-yard touchdown. The score cut the Roadrunners' lead to 31-24 with 7:27 remaining in the third quarter.
  • UTSA intercepted Simon on the next Temple possession and capitalized, as McCown completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to WR Willie McCoy making the score 38-24 UTSA with 4:59 left in the third quarter.
  • The Temple defense earned its second takeaway of the day soon after, as SAF Andreas Keaton intercepted McCown. The Owls used the field position to put three points on the board, as Trujillo converted on a 33-yard FG to make the score 38-27 UTSA with 14:56 to go in the game.
  • Kicker Tate Sandell converted on a 47-yard FG with 8:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, which gave the Roadrunners a 41-27 advantage.
  • UTSA added onto its lead with a Brandon High 3-yard rushing touchdown with 2:29 left to play, enough to seal the Roadrunners' sixth win of the season.

Statistically Speaking
  • Dante Wright's two touchdowns tied a career-high for touchdowns in a single game and marked his first multi-touchdown game as an Owl.
  • With his five catches, Wright now has 100 receptions in his Temple career. This places him 16th on the Temple all-time receptions list.
  • Wright eclipsed the 100 receiving-yard threshold for the fourth time this season, tallying 128 yards on the night.

Notes
  • D.J. Woodbury, Sr., Tra Thomas, Dante Wright, and Evan Simon served as game captains.
  • Woodbury Sr. and Andreas Keaton each recorded their first career interceptions.
  • A third quarter interception ended Temple's ten quarter stretch without a turnover. The last Owls turnover before Friday came in the fourth quarter against East Carolina on October 26.
