Women's Basketball's Furious Rally Falls Short in Season Opener vs. Richmond

11.4.24 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple University women's basketball team fought all the way back from a 17-point deficit to take a lead in the second half, but ultimately fell short in a 79-72 loss to defending Atlantic 10 champion Richmond on Monday at the Liacouras Center. Senior guard Tiarra East led the Owls with 23 points while Tarriyonna Gary added 18 including four three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Richmond and Temple went back and forth through the first 10 minutes of action.
  • UR's Katie Hill connected on a pair of threes in the opening minute to give the Spiders a 6-0 lead, before 11 straight points by the Owls swung momentum back in favor of the home team.
  • Gary had five points in the spurt and Tristen Taylor also knocked down a triple that put Temple in front, 11-6.
  • The Owls led for much of the first quarter until a three from Anna Camden put the score at 17-15, and Richmond entered the end of the first quarter up 22-17.
  • The second quarter saw the visitors hold Temple to 33.3 percent from the field and outscore the home squad 21-12 to take a 43-29 lead into halftime.
  • Temple remained down by double digits deep into the third quarter before a three-pointer from Drew Alexander cut the deficit to 58-49 with 1:19 on the clock.
  • A free throw from Kaylah Turner pulled the Owls even closer at 58-50 as the two teams entered the fourth quarter.
  • East turned it on to start the final stanza, as she went on a personal 8-4 run to put the score at 62-58.
  • Trailing by two at 66-64 with less than four to play, East drilled a go-ahead three to finally give the Owls a lead at 67-66.
  • Richmond responded with five straight before Amaya Oliver made a layup and Gary knocked down a corner three off a nice inbounds play to put the score at 72-71.
  • Unfortunately for Temple, that was the last basket the squad would make as Richmond scored the final eight points of the game en route to the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • East scored 23 points, including 13 in the second half, and also added four assists.
  • Gary's four three-pointers gave her 128 for her Temple career, moving her into a tie for ninth all-time at Temple with former WNBA player Shey Peddy.
  • The Owls knocked down 10 three-pointers for the game, a plateau they reached just three times all of last season.
  • Richmond outrebounded the Owls, 24-9, in the first half but the home team did a much better job in the second half with a 17-15 edge.
  • The second half also saw Temple force 16 Richmond turnovers. The Owls forced the Spiders into 25 turnovers for the game.
  • Rachel Ullstrom led Richmond with 32 points and five steals, and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.
UP NEXT
  • Temple has an eight-day layoff before returning to action on Tuesday, November 12 against Delaware.
  • The road contest in Newark, Del., is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
