No. 9 Owls’ Fencing Prepping for Northwestern Duals

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 9 Temple fencing team will travel to the midwest to compete in the two-day, 13-team Northwestern Duals. Temple begins the meet at 9:15 am ET on Saturday and will conclude the event on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. ET. Live video will be available on the Northwestern Athletics YouTube page.
Five of the Temple's 13 opponents during this weekend's meet are ranked in the top-35 of the latest USFCA mid-season rankings.
On day one, the Owls will face off against the host No. 8 Northwestern, Denison, Lawerence, No. 2 Notre Dame, UC San Diego, and No.12 Stanford. On Sunday, Temple will tangle with Detroit Mercy, Wayne State, Air Force, Incarnate Word, No. 6 Ohio State, and No. 4 Cornell.
In its last time out at the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 19 and Jan. 21, Temple went a combined 92-94 throughout the three weapons. On Jan. 19, Temple pulled out a 14-13 victory against UC San Diego, but fell earlier that day, 16-11 to No. 1 Princeton. On its second day, TU earned a pair of victories over No. 3 Columbia, 16-11, and NJIT, 20-7. Three losses on the day were mixed in against No. 2 Notre Dame, 20-7, No. 12 Yale, 14-13, and No. 7 Penn, 18-9.
Freshman Lauren Johnson had an excellent showing for the Owls over the two days, leading all Temple saberists with nine wins, going 9-4. Sophomore Renee Oymann led the foil squad with nine wins as well, earning a 9-3 record and freshman Grace Smith led all epeeists with eight wins.

The Cherry and White will head to the UNC Duals on Feb. 10 and the Duke Invitational on Feb. 11, before heading back home for team competition a part of the Temple Invitational.
