No. 9 Temple Fencing Finalizes Duke Invitational With 3-1 Day

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 9 Temple fencers improved to 24-12 on the season as they combined for a 3-1 record on Sunday at the Duke Invitational. The Owls defeated Air Force, Brandeis, and Johns Hopkins, but fell just short to the host Duke.

MEET SUMMARY
- The Owls had a strong showing to start the Duke Invitational versus Air Force, winning 19-8, but followed it up with a closely contested loss to Duke, 14-13. The Cherry and White rebounded with back-to-back wins versus Brandeis (22-5) and John Hopkins (16-11).
- Both the epee and sabre teams tallied 30 wins on the afternoon. Epee went 26-10, while sabre fell one short of the epeeists, going 24-12. The foil team recorded 20 wins on the afternoon, ending with a 20-16 record.
- The TU fencers went a combined 70-38 on the day.
- Senior sabreist Alexandra Weinberg tied for the lead of all Temple fencers with seven wins, going 7-1. The Benardsville, N.J. native was perfect in three of the four rounds, including a pair of 3-0 sheets versus Air Force and Duke. Fellow squad member Eva Ventura added five wins, the second most of any sabreist.
- Just like Weinberg did for sabre crew, graduate student Margherita Calderaro tied the Temple-high for day with seven wins. The Rome, Italy native went 7-2 for the Owls, picking up a clean sheet versus Duke. Freshman Lindsey Minor had a perfect afternoon with a 6-0 record, earning three wins each against Air Force and Brandeis. Fellow freshman Grace Smith had five wins, going 5-2. The Wilmington, Mass. Native also went 3-0 against Brandeis.
- Sisters and foilists Anna Novoseltseva and Elizabeth Novoseltseva combined for 10 wins. The Gran Rapids, Mich. natives earned five wins each.

- As a team, Temple will have next week off but will return to action on Feb. 25 for the Temple Invitational (Senior Day). However, Lindsey Minor, Natalie Adams-Kim, Lauren Johnson and Grace Smith will participate at the 2024 Junior Olympics North American Cup in Charlotte, N.C. next weekend, Feb. 16-19.
