Women's Tennis to Face No. 72 NJIT in First Away Match of March

PHILADELPHIA- After gaining two wins at home to start the week, women's tennis (6-2) is set to travel to the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility to face the New Jersey Institute of Technology (10-1) at noon. This marks the first away match in five weeks for the Owls. Temple competed against the Highlanders in the fall at the Villanova Invitational, where the Owls only lost by the doubles point, 4-3.
THE OWLS
- The Cherry and White enter the weekend after adding two victories to their six consecutive wins. Temple began its string of victories by sweeping Siena College and Villanova University, followed by a tandem of wins against Norfolk State University and Howard University. Evie Wei has achieved six consecutive singles and doubles wins. Jessie Zheng has also achieved six singles victories.
- Seated at No. 31 in doubles action, Maiko Uchijima and Samantha Nanere have also achieved No. 19 and 20 this season.
- As a team, Temple completed an intense fall season, where it played in the Penn Invitational from Sept. 8-10, the Villanova Invitational from Sept. 15-17, the Cissie Leary Invitational from Sept. 22-24, ITA Regionals from Oct. 6-8, the Princeton Invitational from Oct. 13-15, ITA Super-Regionals from Nov. 1-5, and the doubles pair of Nanere and Uchijima earned an invitation to the ITA National Fall Championships where they achieved the Round of 8. In November, the pair was ranked No. 20 in National Doubles Rankings.
- Temple finished the 2023 season with a 17-5 overall record, winning all but one match at home.
Scouting NJIT
- The Highlanders have only fallen to Rugers, 6-1, in the early season.
- NJIT is ranked No. 72 in the nation as of Feb. 28.
- Irene Cocero is a key player to the Highlander's success, earning Southland Conference player of the week for her singles and doubles performance.
- NJIT ended the 2023 spring season with an overall record of 10-8 and a 4-0 loss to Northwestern State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
