3.8.24 | Women's Fencing

PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 Temple fencing team will head back to Drew University in Madison, NJ. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on Saturday. The Owls will look to qualify as many fencers for the NCAA Championship as possible, with 12 athletes going to Regionals.

Each weapon will be well represented, with sabreists, Lauren Johnson, Eva Ventura, Alexandra Weinberg, and Zoe Turner, foilists, Elizabeth Novoseltseva, Anna Novoseltseva, Constança Dimas, Anastasia Yankovskiy, and Renee Oymann, epeeist Margherita Calderaro, Grace Smith, and Lindsey Minor.

The Cherry and White opened postseason play last weekend at the NIWFA Championships, once again seeing an impressive performance. Temple earned its 28th straight NIWFA Team title, won the sabre and foil championship for the fifth straight time, and winning two of the three individual titles. Anna Novoseltseva won the foil title for the third straight year while Margherita Calderaro earned her third career epee title.

Sabreist Lauren Johnson earned second place finish after starting individual play as she defeating Rebecca Osbaldeston of Haverford, 15-1 and then knocked off her teammate, senior Alexandra Weinberg, 15-10 to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Johnson took on Alexia Newell, winning 15-12, but lost in the finals against Newell's teammate, Mina Chioldi, in heartbreaking fashion, 15-14.

TU concluded the 2024 NIWFA Championship with Calderaro (epee) and Anna Novoseltseva (foil) earning All-NIWFA First-Team plaudits, while Minor (epee), Weinber (sabre), and Natalie Adams-Kim (foil) earning second Team plaudits.

The Owls went 25-16 in dual play, with wins over ranked teams; No. 2 Notre Dame,  No. 3 Columbia, No. 11 St. John's, and  No. 12 Ohio State.

The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional is being hosted by Drew University on Saturday, March 9 at the Simon Forum. The event begins at 10 a.m. with epee and foil. A break will take place at 12:30 p.m., followed by quarterfinals at 1 p.m., semifinals at 3 p.m., and finals at 5 p.m. Women's sabre will start at 1 p.m. followed by a break at 2 p.m., quarterfinals at 3 p.m., semifinals at 4 p.m., and finals at 5 p.m.

The regional championships serve as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, which will take place March 21-24 at Ohio State University. The qualification for the NCAA Championship is based on a formula comprising of a 60 percent weight on regional performance and 40 percent on regular-season meets. Regional champions for each weapon automatically advance, with remaining bids going to fencers based on performance and the region they compete in (seven spots are available in each weapon from the Mid-Atlantic/South Region).

Ticket prices are $5 for general admission and $3 for children (10 and under), seniors (65 and over), and veterans/first responders.

The NCAA selections will be announced on Tuesday, March 12. At the NCAA Championships, each weapon field will consist of the top 24 fencers from across the nation. For the regional meet, the 36 fencers in each weapon will compete until 12 remain, and those 12 will battle in a round robin final.
