Johnson Named 2024 USFCA Newcomer of the Year

PHILADELPHIA - Following a a breakout season on the strip for Temple, freshman sabreist Lauren Johnson was named USFCA Women's Team Collegiate Newcomer of the Year.

The Charlotte, N.C. native was second on the Owls' sabre squad with a 50-20 season record in 2024. Johnson finished her first NCAA Championships in April in 15th place with 11 bout wins. Prior, Johnson finished the season ranked No. 10 in the Mid Atlantic/South Region and earned First-Team All-NIWFA and USFCA All-Region Second Team honors.
 
"We are so proud of Lauren and she is well deserving of this National Newcomer of the Year honor", said Head Coach Jennie Salmon. "She had a stellar first season as an Owl. Not only did she qualify to the NCAA Championships and win 11 bouts on her way to 15th place, she made her mark as an outstanding teammate and student. Her work ethic, enthusiasm and determination are going to continue to produce great things in her next three seasons to come!"
