Six Temple Student Athletes Named 2024 CSC Academic All-District At-Large

PHILADELPHIA – On Tuesday, Temple athletics student-athletes Katie Shallow, Tess Muller, Alex Catalano, Amarna Milne, Diana Tiburcio, and Margherita Calderaro were named to the 2024 Academic All-District At-Large NCAA Division I team, selected by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA).
Shallow, a 2023 College Sports Communicators All-District plaudit winner was one of the nation's top defenders this past season, ranking in the top five in D-I with 57 caused turnovers and 56 ground balls. In 2024, The Haverford, Pa. native set Temple's single-season and career records for caused turnovers and was named AAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-AAC First Team. Shallow also took home USA Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American, IWLCA Second Team All-Region, and All-ECAC honors. Her 3.71 GPA as a finance major also helped land her on the PhillySIDA Academic All-Area team for the first time in her career.
Muller was named NFHCA Second Team All-Region and First Team All-BIG EAST following a season where she led the Owls with six goals and six assists, totaling 18 points. Three of her goals were game winners, ranking third in the BIG EAST and helping the Owls advance to the conference tournament for a third consecutive season. The Naarden, Netherlands native was second on the team with 29 shots and recorded 21 shots on goal. Academically, the junior holds a 3.77 cumulative grade point average as a health professions major. Muller has earned membership to the NFHCA National Academic team, 2021-23.
Milne excelled on and off the water for the Owls this year, finishing the season with All-AAC Second-Team Honors and a spot on the PhillySIDA Academic All Area team. The Oxford, England native competed for Temple's Varsity 8 during the spring season, a boat that made history for the Owls at the Kelly Cup — the Owls V8 defeated St. Joseph's, La Salle, Drexel, and Jefferson to help bring the Kelly Cup back to Temple for the first time since 2006. Milne competed for the Owls' Varsity 8 boat that earned AAC Boat of the Week after taking first place at the George Washington Invite, amidst turbulent conditions on the Potomac River. Milne, a Media & Communications major with a certificate in sports marketing, maintains a 3.91 GPA through the competition of her junior year.
Catalano, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., led Temple's Varsity 8 boat as its coxswain this spring, earning All-AAC First-Team Honors at the conclusion of the year and finished her junior season with a 3.65 GPA, majoring in engineering. Catalano led Temple's Varsity 8 to AAC Boat of the Week Honors after the George Washington Invite and saw the Owls take first place in the Kelly Cup to bring home the prestigious trophy back to the Temple boathouse. She was recognized at the 2024 Temple Stellas: A Celebration of Champions, as a member of the President's Honor Roll. The recognition is given to student-athletes who achieved a cumulative grade average of 3.5 or above.
Tiburcio finished up her senior season with the Temple fencing team where she had a career record of 102-60, while picking up All-NIWFA honors. In 2024, the Malvern, Pa. native tallied a 33-14 record as she helped the Owls to 25-16 record During the season, Tiburcio earned a season-best 15 wins during the two-day Northwestern Duals where she defeated No. 14 Stanford 2-1 and was undefeated versus Lawerence (3-0), Detroit Mercy (3-0), Wayne State (3-0). Academically, the sabreist majored in mechanical engineering and held a cumulative 3.95 grade point average. Tiburcio earned various academic awards in her career including a 2024 Fulbright Scholarship, a 2023 Goldwater Scholarship, and an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
Calderaro is one of the most decorated Temple fencers in school history on and off the strip. The Rome, Italy native earned over 200 wins throughout her five-year Owls' career. In 2024, the epeeist earned a squad best 51 wins and helped the program to its 28th straight NIWFA Team Championship, while individually earning her third straight epee championship. In all, Calderaro is a four-time NCAA Regional qualifier, aNCAA Championship qualifier, a three-time USFCA All-Region, a USFCA All-American, and a NCAA All-American. Scholastically, the graduate student holds a 4.0 cumulative grade point average while completing a neuroscience graduate degree. Calderaro earned USFCA Scholar of Distinction honors on three occasions, 2023 College Sports Communicators All-District, the 2023 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award, and the 2023 American Athletic Conference Sport Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second, and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on July 16.
