Mastropietro, Tiburcio Earn AAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honors

IRVING, Texas - Belle Mastropietro of women's lacrosse and Diana Tiburcio from fencing have been named the American Athletic Conferenc Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. Tiburcio was honored in the at-large category. 

It is the second year in a row that Mastropietro has received the AAC women's lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The three-time AAC Midfielder of the Year was Temple's 2024 Female Athlete of the Year, has earned four All-AAC selections, three IWLCA All-Region selections and three USA Lacrosse/Inside Lacrosse All-American selections. The graduate student finished the 2023-24 academic year with a 3.95 GPA in the Exercise Science program while continuing her success on the field, leading the Owls in goals, assists, points, and draw controls en route to the AAC Tournament.

Tiburcio finished up her senior season with the Temple fencing team where she had a career record of 102-60, while picking up All-NIWFA honors. In 2024, the Malvern, Pa. native tallied a 33-14 record as she helped the Owls to 25-16 record During the season, Tiburcio earned a season-best 15 wins during the two-day Northwestern Duals where she defeated No. 14 Stanford 2-1 and was undefeated versus Lawerence (3-0), Detroit Mercy (3-0), Wayne State (3-0). Academically, the sabreist majored in mechanical engineering and held a cumulative 3.95 grade point average. Tiburcio earned various academic awards in her career including a 2024 Fulbright Scholarship, a 2023 Goldwater Scholarship, and an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

The American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are among of a number of scholarships presented by the conference during the academic year. The conference has presented individual sport Scholar-Athletes of the Year in baseball, men's basketball and women's basketball since the 2013-14 season. The conference has presented individual awards in all other sports beginning with the 2017-18 season.
