Women’s Soccer Opens its Season With a Pair of Games This Week

PHILADELPHIA- Under new head coach Chris Shaw, Temple women's soccer is ready for fall. It will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 15 against Monmouth. The match is set for 7 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. This is followed by a road game against Villanova on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 4 p.m.
 
Scouting Temple
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tasmin Byone started nine games and saw action in eleven total and made 58 saves.
  • Sophomore transfer from Delaware State, Ahsia Thomas started all 15 matches for the Hornets. She logged the second most field minutes with 1,276 and recorded seven shots on goal.
  • Junior Fiona Kilian started 16 games and saw action in all 18 matches. She achieved Temple's first assist during a 2-2 game against La Salle on 9/10. She took 13 shots, including seven on goal.
  • Senior Phoebe Hollin started all 18 games, clocking 1558 minutes, she took eight shots, including four on goal and she led the team in corner kicks.
  • The Owls have eight incoming freshmen joining the roster, bringing a wave of fresh energy and talent to the team.
  • Head coach Chris Shaw, will appear in his first game with the Owls. In 15 years as a head coach, Shaw has compiled a 158-117-20 record.  In 2023, Shaw led the Colonials to one of their most successful season in history (12-5-3), taking the team to the semifinals of the Horizon League Championship.
 
Scouting Monmouth
  • The Hawks were 11-6- 2 last season, making it to the Coastal Athletic Association semifinal.
  • Sophomore defender Lauren Bruno, was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
  • The Hawks returns sophomore Liza Suydam last year's CAA rookie of the year. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Coster has recorded 10 shutouts. Senior defender Chloe Ferreira helped the Hawks limit 13 of 16 opponents to one goal or less on the scoreboard last season.
  • Head coach Kylee Flynn has been a key part of Monmouth women's soccer's recent success, as the Hawks have posted a 14-3-4 league record in their first two seasons in the CAA. In Flynn's first two seasons, the Hawks have posted 24 total wins and recorded 20 shutouts.
 
Series History versus Monmouth
The last time the Owls played the Hawks was in 2007, with a 0-1-1 record.
 
Scouting Villanova
  • The Wildcats were 4-7-7 last season.
  • Returning for the wildcats, senior forward Lauren Belcuore, appeared in 44 games and made 32 starts in three seasons. She took 22 shots with 12 of them on goal.
  • Senior Myla McLeod, started 23 games and appeared in 34 at Villanova with 40 total games played. She totaled 1749 minutes on the pitch in her first two seasons as a Wildcat.
  • Senior Brigid Molloy, appeared in 40 games making 24 starts in three seasons. She totaled 1950 minutes on the pitch, tallied six points from one goal and four assists.
  • Heading into the 2024 season, head coach Samar Azem has led the 'Cats to an 8-15-11 record. Her 10-year overall head coaching record stands at 79-69-28.
 
Series History against Villanova
This will be the seventh match-up between the two components with a 1-5 record for the Owls.
