Volleyball in South Carolina This Weekend For Three Matches

PHILADELPHIA - The Owls are on the road this weekend this weekend as they travel to the state of the South Carolina for three matches. On Friday and Saturday, the Cherry and White will compete at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. Temple gets the tournament underway on Friday at 6 p.m. as it takes on the host South Carolina on the SECN+. The following day, TU will take on North Carolina at 3 p.m. To close out the weekend, The Owls head up to Clinton, S.C. to take on the Presbyterian Highlanders at 2 p.m.
 
SCOUTING TEMPLE
On Monday, sophomore Lexi Yoza was named AAC Setter of the Week after 79 assists through the first four matches. After week one, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native is sixth in the AAC, while averaging 6.08 assists per set and ranking seventh in the conference.  With Yoza a part of a two-setter Temple offense, she opened Labor Day weekend with back-to-back-back 20-assist matches against Rider (26), Radford (21), and FDU (20). Then on Sunday, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native guided the Owls to a team-high 12 assists against No. 7 Penn State. On defense, the sophomore is tied for second the team after four games with 21 digs.
 
Taylor Davenport continues to be the main focal point of opposing defenses but continues to put up outstanding numbers. Davenport earned Cherry and White Invitational MVP honors after leading the Owls to victories over FDU, Radford, and Rider. In total, the outside hitter played in four matches where she totaled 53 kills which was tops in the conference after week one with 53 kills and was second in the AAC with 4.08 kills per set. On Friday, Davenport opened the season with 20 kills, hitting .310 and seven digs against Rider and less than one hour later, Davenport put together a .452 hitting percentage with a 17-kill, eight-digs effort against Radford. Davenport led the conference with 62 points after four matches and was second with 4.77 points per set. The former middle hitter continues to improve her all-around game by helping on the defensive side, picking up 21 digs, tying Yoza for the second most of any Owls' player.
 
SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA
Riley Whitesides is leading the way offensively with 44 kills, averaging 4.40 kills per set, ranking 6th the Southeastern Conference and seventh with 4.55 points per set. Victoria Harris is a defensive stalwart with 42 digs and is sixth in the conference with 4.20 digs per set.
 
ALL-TIME VS. SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina holds a 2-0 advantage with both matches occurring in 2011 and 2012.
 
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
Emani' Foster and Mabrey Shaffmaster are tied a top the Tar Heels offensive leaderboard with 32 kills apiece.  Both UNC hitters are tied for ninth in the ACC in kills, but it's Foster which ranks eighth with 4.00 kills per set and a .548 hitting percentage. On the service line, Shaffmaster is ranked sixth in the conference with seven aces and .78 aces per set.
 
ALL-TIME VS. NORTH CAROLINA
The Owls are winless in five all-time matches against the Heels with the last matchup taking place in 2010.
 
SCOUTING PREBYTERIAN
Julia Yurkovich leads the Highlanders with 28 kills, but it's her teammate Courtney Williams leads the team with 2.85 points per set and 37 total points. Wiliams also one of the leaders in kills with 27 kills and a hitting percentage of .255. On defense, the Highlanders have three players in the top 10 of the Big South in blocks, all with 10 or more, after week one of play. Williams (18) is second in the conference with 1.38 blocks per set, while her teammates Brittney Daphnis (16) and Elyse Hutchinson (11) are third and ninth respectively with 1.23 and .85 blocks per set.
 
ALL-TIME VS. PRESBYTERIAN
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
 
UP NEXT
Temple will return to the Philadelphia area next weekend as it travels to Texas to compete in the Aggie Invitational on Sept. 13-15.
