Owls Extend Winning Streak with 69-52 Victory Over ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Temple women's basketball (12-6, 6-1 AAC) defeated East Carolina (10-9, 2-5 AAC) 69-52 at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon. Temple had three players in double figures: Tarriyonna Gary (13), Tiarra East (19), and Kaylah Turner (14).
Gary is now tied for third with Qwedia Wallace in Temple's history for career three-pointers, with 162, after just three seasons with the team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Jaleesa Molina opened the scoring for both teams with a corner jumper just 40 seconds into the game.
- ECU's Anzhane Hutton responded with a layup, scoring the first basket for the Pirates.
- Heading into the media timeout at the 4:41 mark, ECU went 0-6 and had a scoring drought lasting over three minutes.
- At the 3:22 mark, Anissa Rivera hit a three to increase Temple's lead to 11-8, ending a scoring drought lasting more than two minutes.
- Temple made the final three field goals of the period – including two from beyond the arc – and that 8-3 run gave the Owls a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
- Tarriyonna Gary forced ECU's tenth turnover, and Kaylah Turner secured the loose ball, scoring the first basket of the second quarter, giving Temple an 18-11 lead with 8:36 remaining.
- The Pirates opened the second quarter with a layup by Joyner, and ECU went on a 5-0 run, cutting Temple's lead to 20-18.
- After missing four consecutive field goals, Amaya Oliver made a layup, ending the Owls' scoring drought as they headed into the 5:00 media timeout.
- The Owls had seven possessions resulting in turnovers over a span of more than three minutes.
- ECU also had a scoring drought lasting over three minutes after the media timeout at the 5-minute mark.
- Oliver scored the last five points for the Owls, giving them a seven-point advantage over ECU, 25-18, with 1:49 remaining in the half.
- ECU went scoreless in the final 5:44 and didn't hit a field goal in the last 7:00 minutes of the first half.
Third Quarter
- Temple opened the quarter with a 6-0 run, including threes from Molina and Gary. The Owls built their largest lead of the game, 13 points, 31-18, with 7:01 remaining.
- ECU made two free throws at the 6:45 mark, their first points in nearly nine minutes.
- Temple's defense forced ECU into three early turnovers, with steals from East and Molina, capitalizing with five points.
- The Owls went on a 13-0 run, with points from Gary (6), East (2), and Turner (5), extending their lead to 25 points, 46-21, at the 2:46 mark. Gary (11) and Turner (13) reached double figures during Temple's run.
- ECU's Ware scored the last bucket of the third quarter, a corner three, cutting their deficit to 21 points, 52-31.
Fourth Quarter
- After solid defensive plays from both teams, ECU's Ware scored the first bucket, trimming Temple's lead to 18 points, 52-34, with 8:28 remaining in the quarter.
- A quick run by the Pirates cut the Temple lead to 15 before East and Gary hit jumpers to push the cushion back to 19, 58-39.
- East scored nine of Temple's 11 points prior to ECU's timeout with 5:08 left in the period.
- ECU went on a 9-0 run to make it 63-50 at the 2:12 mark. East once again ended a Pirates' run with a bucket.
- East scored the last three baskets of the game as Temple closed out the victory 69-52.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Temple forced ECU into 16 turnovers in the first half, with 10 of those coming from steals.
- The Owls capitalized on turnovers, scoring 14 points off of them.
- Temple shot 32.3% (10-31) from the field, while ECU shot 21.7% (5-23) in the first half.
- Temple held ECU to just seven points in the second quarter, the fewest points allowed by the Owls this season.
- The Owls' defense held ECU to 0-11 shooting from the field to start the third quarter.
- Felicia Jacobs had a career-high four points and seven rebounds.
- Between the 7:00 mark in the second quarter and the 3:00 mark in the third quarter, ECU went 0-18 shooting from the field over a 14-minute stretch. During that time, Temple outscored ECU 26-6, building a 25-point lead, 46-21.
- Temple shot 52.6% (10-19) from the field in the third quarter, including 5-7 from three-point range.
- The Owls scored 27 points in the third quarter, their most points in a single quarter this season.
- Temple went 7-10 from the free-throw line, while ECU attempted 28 free throws, the most of any opponent this season.
- East scored 17 points in the second half, with 2 points in the third quarter and 15 points in the fourth.
