Temple Tops FAU 75-69 in OT Behind Turner's 25 Points

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Temple (9-6, 3-1 AAC) beats Florida Atlantic (9-7, 1-2 AAC) 75-69 in overtime on Wednesday evening at Abessinio Court at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Kaylah Turner had a career-high 25 points, shooting 8-14 from the field and 5-8 from three, playing 31 minutes. Turner was a huge part of Temple's 28 bench points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
• After turnovers from both teams on their opening possessions, FAU took a 2-0 advantage with 8:16 remaining. Ta'Ziah Jenks followed by nailing a three, giving FAU a five-point lead.
• The Owls got their first basket of the game following an FAU foul that sent Jaleesa Molina to the line at the 6:51 mark in the first quarter.
• Tarriyonna Gary had a steal and a layup, and Temple trailed 8-3 with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter.
• Out of the media timeout, Kaylah Turner made a jumper, and Tiarra East made a right-wing three, cutting into FAU's lead.
• With 2:20 remaining in the first quarter, Temple stormed back, going on a 10-0 run to take the lead following a pull-up jumper from Turner, putting the game at 10-9. East followed by making her second three of the night, giving Temple a four-point lead, 13-9.
• Closing out the first quarter, Temple went on a 15-1 run lasting over five minutes, and the Owls went 5-7 from the field during this run. The quarter ended with Temple holding a 16-9 lead.
• Temple forced FAU to have six turnovers in the final five minutes of the first quarter. During this stretch, FAU went 0-9 from the field.
Second Quarter
• To open the second quarter, Stefani Ingram scored FAU's first bucket after being in a scoring drought for over five minutes.
• FAU went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Molina immediately responded with a three, giving Temple a one-point lead, 19-18, with 7:44 remaining in the half.
• With 6:05 on the clock in the second quarter, FAU had made 5-6 shots from the field.
• There were eight lead changes, and both teams exchanged baskets, keeping the lead within three points. (At the 3:45 timeout, the officials declared an earlier three-pointer by FAU came after the shot clock, resetting the score to 28-22.)
FAU's Jada Moore kept the Owls in the game with 15 of FAU's 29 first-half points. Temple held a 33-29 lead heading into halftime. For Temple, East reached double digits in the first half (10 points) and was joined by Gary (7), Turner (7), and Molina (6) among the top scorers.
Third Quarter
• Tristen Taylor scored her first basket of the night to open the second half. Turner reached double digits (10 points) after making a three, giving Temple a nine-point lead, 38-29, early in the third quarter.
• Midway through the third quarter, Temple outscored FAU 14-5, building a 13-point lead, 47-34. Rivera and Turner accounted for 10 of Temple's 14 points.
• Heading into the media timeout, FAU was 1-7 from the field and had a scoring drought that lasted over three minutes.
• After being in a scoring drought, FAU responded with a 6-2 run in the final two minutes, cutting the lead to eight, 49-41.
• Temple limited FAU's scoring opportunities and held FAU to 12 points in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
• FAU opened the period with a 6-0 run, cutting the Temple lead to two, 49-47, before Temple responded with four points to push the lead back to six, 53-47.
• Ta'Ziah Jenks made back-to-back baskets to bring FAU within two. Molina responded with a drive to the basket to make the score 55-51.
• Jada Moore then converted a three-point play to cut the Temple lead to one with 5:15 remaining.
• Turner made a crucial three-pointer, giving Temple a four-point lead, 58-54, with 4:29 remaining.
• Temple and FAU both had scoring droughts lasting more than two minutes that ended in a three by FAU at the 1:40 mark. That left the score at 58-57. A timeout and official review resulted in technical fouls for both teams and an additional intentional foul on Temple. That allowed Mya Perry to attempt two free throws, which she missed.
• Six seconds after the timeout, FAU went ahead with a two, 59-58, before Turner hit a three just eight seconds later to give Temple a 61-59 advantage.
• FAU tied the score at 61-61 with 20 seconds remaining.
• Temple had a chance to take a game-winning shot but did not connect, sending the game into overtime.
Overtime
• FAU's Perry hit a three-pointer six seconds into the period for a 64-61 lead.
• An exchange of foul shots made the score 65-62.
• Gary drove to the basket for a layup to bring the score to 65-64 at the 3:08 mark. Then Turner hit a three at 2:26 to give Temple a 67-65 advantage. That put Turner over 20 points for the game.
• Turner scored again to push the lead to four, 69-65.
• After FAU scored two at the 1:11 mark, East hit a jumper to make it 71-67, with 43 seconds remaining.
• Jenks was fouled with 30.1 seconds left but made just one-of-two. Temple ahead, 71-68.
• Taylor was fouled with 24.9 seconds remaining and hit both free throws for a five-point Temple lead, 73-68.
• Savannah Curry wrestled an important rebound under the FAU basket and was fouled with 13 seconds left. Turner was fouled on the inbound pass and made both of her free throws to give Temple a 75-68 lead.
• An FAU free throw made the final score 75-69.
