Owls Secure the Season Sweep Over UAB

2.11.25 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball (14-10, 8-5 AAC) defeated the UAB Blazers (15-10, 6-7 AAC), 63-53, in front of 1,319 fans Tuesday evening at the Liacouras Center. Jaleesa Molina led the Owls in scoring with a career-high-tying performance of 17 points while earning her fifth double-double this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • The Owls scored first with a layup from under the basket by Amaya Oliver after some strong perimeter defense forced the Blazers to make a tough shot off the tip.
  • UAB came back shooting fast, scoring 10 of the next 12 points, forcing Temple to take a timeout to reset, 10-4, at the 6:58 mark.
  • A timeout seemed was exactly what the Owls needed, with Tarriyonna Gary converting a three-point play within 10 seconds. The momentum did not stop on defense as Jaleesa Molina grabbed two defensive rebounds, along with Anissa Rivera getting one of her own.
  • Tiarra East snapped a two-minute scoring drought in the game with a pull-up three-pointer, taking back the lead for Temple, 13-10, with 4:05 left in the quarter.
  • The Blazers grabbed their first points since the 6:58 timeout with a layup from Jade Weathersby, fouled on the way up but missed the free throw, 15-12, at the 2:12 mark.
  • UAB closed out the scoring for the quarter after a shot from Weathersby, cutting Temple's lead to four, 18-14.

Second Quarter

  • The second quarter started with multiple possessions of strong defense on both sides, which led to tough shot selections. East broke the deadlock after recovering her offensive rebound to score in the paint, 20-14.
  • The Blazers continued to fight to keep the game close, scoring six of the next eight points, including four from Molly Moffitt, to make it a two-point game, 22-20.
  • The sophomore, Weathersby, tied the game with a layup as the teams headed into the 4:07 media timeout, 22-22.
  • Molina converted both free throws coming out of the timeout, sparking another resurgence of the offense as Temple scored nine straight, five coming from freshman guard Savannah Curry, 31-22.
  • Despite a three-pointer from UAB's Maddie Walsh, Temple's offense stayed hot to close out the half with mid-range shots from Rivera and Tristen Taylor, 35-25.

Third Quarter

  • UAB opened up the second half with Sara Bershers converting both free throws after a personal foul by Oliver.
  • Eight of the first 11 points of the half came from the foul line, with five personal fouls called by the 6:19 mark, 40-29.
  • Following the media timeout, the teams traded empty possessions until Rivera converted a three-point play on a fast break to give Temple a double-digit lead (12).
  • East forced the Blazers to take a timeout after scoring a fast-break layup on an intercepted pass from Eleecia Carter, 48-33, with 1:57 left in the quarter.
  • UAB scored its first baskets since before the media timeout with three made free throws by Weathersby and a layup from Carter, 48-38.
  • East drew the foul with one second left in the quarter, going one for two, giving the Owls an 11-point lead heading into the final quarter, 49-38.

Fourth Quarter

  • Three scorers grabbed points for the Owls within the first 1:13 minutes, 55-41.
  • Molina grabbed a rebound at the 5:37 mark to reach a double-double, her fifth of the season.
  • UAB drained five shots from the line, the only points scored in the two minutes leading up to the media timeout, 57-46, at the 5:12 mark.
  • Weathersby drained the first field goal by either team in nearly five minutes, 59-48, at 2:48.
  • The Blazers brought the game within 10 points for the first time since the third quarter with a free throw from Genevive Wedemeyer, with 2:31 left in the quarter.
  • Heading into the final minute of play with an eight-point lead, Taylor and Rivera made crucial steals to help secure Temple's win over the Blazers, 63-53.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • The Owls outrebounded the Blazers in the first quarter, 12-9, led by Molina's three.
  • Molina led the Owls in scoring at halftime with 11 points, shooting 57% from the field, and staying perfect from the line and behind the arc.
  • Temple had four players with five or more points by halftime.
  • Both teams committed six personal fouls in the third quarter. UAB converted nine of 10 shots from the line, while Temple sank five of its seven.
  • Two Owls scored 10 or more points against the Blazers: Molina (17) and East (13).
  • Jaleesa Molina tied a career-high 17 points, adding her fifth double-double this season.
  • Gary was one point and rebound shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
