Freshmen Lead Owls to Thrilling 5-4 Comeback Win over Delaware in Season Opener

NEWARK, Del. – Trailing 3-2 entering the fourth quarter, the Temple University field hockey team erupted for three goals in the final frame and hung on to defeat Delaware, 5-4, in the season opener at Fred P. Rullo Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Owls (1-0) picked up an impressive road win to start the season. The Blue Hens (0-1) will seek their first win Sunday against Cal.
After graduating its top three point scorers, Temple started four freshmen, who combined to contribute nine of the Owls' 11 points. Mara Lenting opened the scoring and led the team with two goals. Lucia Magro added a goal and an assist for three points, while Kathryn Gauvin and Isabella Pisano also found the back of the cage.
How It Happened
- Temple struck first as Lenting inserted a penalty corner to Agustina Tucceri, who stopped the ball for Magro. Magro delivered a precise pass back to Lenting in front of the cage for the opening goal of the season.

- Trailing 1-0 after the first quarter, Delaware's Iris Bekker and Emma Miller scored to lift the Blue Hens to a halftime lead.
- Gauvin tied the score with her first collegiate goal, rocketing an unassisted shot in the 35th minute.

- Delaware's Katie Fiest answered five minutes later, giving the Blue Hens a 3-2 edge with 15 minutes left in regulation.
- Temple regrouped and scored three consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter. Lenting tallied her second goal on a nearly identical penalty-corner play. Magro followed with the eventual game-winner, finishing a high pass from Peyton Rieger just outside the circle. Pisano added her second career goal with less than five minutes remaining to put the Owls up by two, but Delaware cut the deficit to one with a goal at the 2:30 mark.

- Temple held on to secure the thrilling 5-4 victory.
- The Owls have now won back-to-back games against Delaware (2023, 2025) for the first time since 2005-06. Delaware leads the all-time series, 23-14-1.
By The Numbers
- Delaware outshot Temple 16-8 and held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Blue Hens also had a slim edge in penalty corners (6-5).
- Owl goalkeepers Isabella Ospitale and Alex Lepore (1-0) each played a half, conceding two goals apiece. Lepore made four saves, while Ospitale added two.
