Late Rally Falls Short as Temple Drops 2-1 Decision to Delaware

PHILADELPHIA – A fourth-quarter goal from Kathryn Gauvin pulled Temple within one, but the Owls' late push fell short in a 2-1 loss to Delaware on Friday afternoon at Howarth Field.With the loss, Temple moves to 5-5 overall and remains 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while Delaware improves to 4-5.
Gauvin scored her fourth goal of the season to lead the Temple attack. The Owls outshot Delaware, 12-11, and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, including a 6-4 edge in shots during the fourth quarter. Alex Lepore made four saves in cage.
Temple returns to action Sunday, traveling to No. 10 Princeton for a noon contest.
How It Happened
Temple generated the first dangerous chance of the afternoon in the fifth minute when Brooke Weaver put an attempt on cage, but Delaware's Lily Cosner recorded a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
Delaware broke through at the 11:18 mark. Livia van't Hek collected the ball inside the circle and sent a shot through traffic and into the cage for her third goal of the season, giving the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Hens doubled their advantage just over three minutes into the third quarter. After Lepore made a save to force a penalty corner, van Leeuwen sent the ensuing ball toward the cage, where van't Hek redirected it home for her second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season.
Temple entered the fourth quarter trailing 2-0 but generated its strongest offensive stretch of the afternoon late in the period. The Owls earned three consecutive penalty corners beginning at the 53:32 mark.
On the third opportunity, Rozlyn Maciejewski's shot was saved by Baldy before Emmie Goldberg's follow-up was kept out by a defensive save from van Leeuwen. Gauvin stayed with the play and knocked home the loose ball at 53:56, cutting the Delaware lead to 2-1.

Temple pulled Lepore for an extra field player with 2:59 remaining and continued to press for the equalizer. Mina Uezbe sent an attempt wide in the 58th minute, but Delaware held on for the one-goal victory.
