Temple Falls to No. 19 Monmouth, 4-2, in Home Opener

9.11.26 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – Despite erasing an early two-goal deficit, the Temple University field hockey team fell to No. 19 Monmouth, 4-2, in its home opener on Friday afternoon at Howarth Field.

With the loss, Temple falls to 2-3 on the season, while Monmouth improves to 3-1.

Riley Gallagher and Kathryn Gauvin each found the back of the cage for the Owls, while Rozlyn Maciejewski added an assist. Goalkeeper Alex Lepore finished with five saves. Temple placed five of its seven shots on goal, while Monmouth held a 14-7 advantage in total shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.

Temple returns to Howarth Field on Sunday, hosting Rider at 11 a.m.

How It Happened

Monmouth broke through late in the opening quarter following a penalty corner. Maja Schröder sent the ball toward the cage, where Alicia Vanderlyde redirected it through traffic and past Lepore to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage at the 12:24 mark.

Just 25 seconds later, Schröder doubled the lead. The freshman carried the ball into the circle, worked her way into shooting space and sent a low attempt through traffic to make it 2-0.

Temple responded immediately to begin the second quarter. Just 34 seconds into the frame, Lucia Magro sent a ball into the circle, where Maciejewski got a stick on it and redirected it across the scoring area. Gallagher finished the play from close range to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Owls continued to generate pressure throughout the period. Lotje Aalderink had an attempt blocked following a penalty corner, while Temple earned another corner later in the frame.

With just 31 seconds remaining before halftime, Gauvin found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season, completing Temple's comeback and sending the teams into the break tied at 2-2.

Temple nearly grabbed its first lead early in the third quarter when Maciejewski put an attempt on cage, but Monmouth goalkeeper Charlie Bowman turned it away.

The Hawks regained the advantage at the 35:36 mark. Vanderlyde controlled the ball on the left side of the circle, worked around a Temple defender and carried toward the middle before sending a low shot past Lepore for her second goal of the afternoon and a 3-2 Monmouth lead.

Temple remained within one entering the fourth quarter, with Lepore making a pair of saves in the final frame to keep the Owls in striking distance.

Mina Uezbe generated Temple's best opportunity of the fourth, putting a shot on cage in the 51st minute that Bowman stopped.

The Owls pulled Lepore in favor of an extra field player with 1:26 remaining in search of the equalizer. Claire Campen scored into the empty cage with one second remaining to account for the 4-2 final.
