Third-Quarter Surge Powers Temple Past Rider, 5-0

PHILADELPHIA - A three-goal third-quarter surge powered the Temple University field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Rider on Sunday morning at Howarth Field.
With the win, Temple improves to 3-3 on the season, while Rider falls to 0-6.
Five different Owls found the back of the cage, highlighted by goals from Rozlyn Maciejewski, Lucia Magro and Kathryn Gauvin in a span of just 4:11 during the third quarter. Amanda Martin and Mathéa Lassalle also scored, while Temple outshot Rider, 27-4, and held an 18-1 advantage in shots on goal. Maciejewski finished with a goal and an assist, while Magro also recorded a goal and an assist.
Temple returns to Howarth Field on Friday to open BIG EAST play against Georgetown.
How It Happened
Temple controlled much of the opening quarter, allowing just one Rider shot while generating a pair of its own. The Owls' best opportunity came off a penalty corner in the 11th minute, when Lassalle's attempt was stopped by Rider goalkeeper Jade Regnart.
The Owls continued to generate chances in the second quarter, firing seven shots before finally breaking through with 1:21 remaining before halftime. Martin inserted a Temple penalty corner before working toward the cage, where she deflected Magro's ensuing shot past Regnart to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage.

Temple then broke the game open with a dominant third quarter, scoring three times in a span of 4:11.
Maciejewski started the surge at the 34:09 mark, carrying the ball into the circle and fighting through a Rider defender before finishing from close range to double the Temple lead.

Just 2:21 later, Uezbe found Magro near the top of the circle. Magro created space and fired past Regnart to push the Owls' advantage to 3-0.

Temple struck again only 1:50 later. Maciejewski played the ball ahead to Gauvin, who carried into the circle and finished from the right side to make it 4-0 with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Owls finished the third quarter with nine shots while limiting Rider to two, taking a four-goal advantage into the final frame.
Lepore made her lone save of the contest late in the third before Jitta entered in goal to begin the fourth quarter.
Temple added its fifth goal in the 51st minute. Magro's initial shot off a penalty corner was stopped by Regnart, but Lassalle collected the rebound and knocked it into the cage for the 5-0 advantage.

The Owls continued to control play down the stretch, holding Rider without a fourth-quarter shot while generating nine attempts of their own to close out the victory.
