Ryan Sandell completed his first season as men's soccer assistant coach in 2023. He oversaw the transition to two new goalkeepers in year one, with newcomers Flannan Riley and Andrew Kempe taking over in net for the Owls.

Riley and Kempe combined to rank second in the American Conference in saves per game under Sandell's tutelage, posting a pair of clean sheets and four games with only one goal allowed. Riley led the Owls to a shutout in the season opener at Monmouth and was in goal for Temple's 2-1 upset of defending National Champions and No. 10 ranked Syracuse, while Kempe recorded a shutout in the Owls' 3-0 win over FAU on October 4.

Prior to Temple, Sandell served as a volunteer assistant coach at Penn for two seasons. During his tenure, the Quakers won the 2022 Ivy League Championship, finishing with a 13-3-2 overall record while going 6-1-0 in conference play. Penn's keepers allowed less than one goal per game and posted seven shutouts during the run.

His coaching career began in 2018 when he joined Drexel University as a volunteer assistant and goalkeepers coach before accepting his first full-time coaching offer with Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA., a year later.

The city of Philadelphia has been familiar to Sandell for quite some time as he was a standout goalkeeper for St. Joseph's Prep, earning first-team All-Catholic league honors. He would then play collegiately for Elizabethtown College where he finished his career with a 0.68 GAA, a .825 save percentage, and eight shutouts.

Following graduation, Sandell started his semi-professional career with the Philadelphia Fury of the American Soccer League before heading overseas for Skellefteå, Sweden to join Morön BK. While there, he helped lead the team to a league title while starting all 22 games for a 15-2-1 regular season record. In over 1,620 minutes, he held a 0.66 GAA and had eight shutouts between the pipes.
