Matt Jelley, the highly successful head cross country/track coach at Toms River North High School for the past seven years, is entering his fourth season as assistant track coach at Temple. Jelley primarliy deals with both the men’s and women’s cross country teams.
The Owls’ distance program has thrived under Jelley, reaching new heights in every meet. In his first season at Temple, he guided the men’s cross country team to a program best ninth place finish at the A-10 Championships. Since then, the Owls have placed as high as fifth (2009) and have witnessed the program’s first ever All-Conference honoree - Mike May.
Temple has become a threat outside of the conference as well, breaking into the regional rankings and becoming a presence at the IC4A Championships. The men posted back-to-back University Seciton titles in 2009 and 2010.
On the women’s side, Temple has continued to make strides. The Owls placed 13th in consecutive seasons in 2009 and 2010, placing 17th as a team at the 2010 ECAC?Championships.
While at Toms River, Jelley was named the 2001 New Jersey Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Newark Star-Ledger and coached four cross country teams (2001-04) to national rankings by Harrier Magazine. He also mentored 10 high school All-Americans and owned a 41-5 dual meet record during his time at Toms River North (2000-07).
A 1996 graduate of Clemson University, Jelley was a three-year performer on the cross country and track teams. He also spent time at Monmouth University (1991-92), where he set five school records in cross country and track, and Ocean County College (1992-93), where he was an academic and athletic All-American in cross country.
