CJ Jones joined the Temple Basketball family as an assistant coach in June of 2016.

In 2017-18, Jones helped mentor Temple’s outstanding freshman class. Rookies Mia Davis and Emani Mayo both earned American Athletic Conference All-Freshman honors, while classmates Breanna Perry and Desiree Oliver both saw significant playing time. Jones also helped guide senior guard Tanaya Atkinson to Temple’s first-ever American scoring title. Atkinson also became just the second Temple player ever to finish her career with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Temple’s 2016-17 season was one of its best, as the Owls went 24-8 overall, earned an NCAA bid, and finished second in the tough American Athletic Conference. Reaching the 20-win plateau for the third-straight year, Temple notched the program’s best-ever RPI of 18 (at the end of regular season play), and finished with a final RPI of 25. The Owls were ranked nationally for five weeks of the season, and beat two nationally-ranked teams (#16/17 DePaul, #20/21 USF). Locally, Temple swept through the Philadelphia Big 5, taking the title with a 4-0 record.

Prior to arriving on North Broad, Jones was no stranger to the American Athletic Conference, having spent the last two seasons coaching at East Carolina.

In two seasons with the Pirates, Jones’ efforts helped to bolster ECU’s recruiting success, while aiding in game preparation and player development. While at ECU, he helped the Pirates to 35 wins in two years, including a spot in the 2015 American Athletic Conference semifinals, as well as a WNIT second round appearance in 2015.

Before ECU, Jones spent five seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s program at NCAA Division II’s Francis Marion University. There, his teams combined for an overall record of 73-63, including an 18-10 mark during the 2009-10 campaign. Some of Jones’ responsibilities included developing recruiting strategies, overseeing individual workouts for players, assisting with academic support, coordinating summer youth basketball camps.

Jones has also served as a team assistant for three years with the Detroit Pistons and one year with the Miami Heat at the NBA Summer League. His duties include facilitating on-court drills and providing support to the head coaches and players during games.

As a player, Jones was a member of Francis Marion’s men’s basketball team from 2007-09, where he started 47 games during his two seasons. As a senior, he shot 57.6 percent from the field and ranked second in assists, sixth in steals and 17th in rebounds per game in the Peach Belt Conference. He played his first two seasons of college ball at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz., where he averaged 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game in 2006-07. He earned first team all-conference recognition and was all-region honorable mention.

A native of Las Vegas, Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Francis Marion in 2010. He and his wife, Leeza, have three sons, Crayton “Cinco," Cayson, and Cai.
