Erica Szpynda joined Temple Athletics as a graduate extern for the fencing program in August, 2015. She is a 2014 graduate of Widener University where she was a scholar athlete as well as an All-American in the shot put and Academic All-American as a member of the track and field team.

Szpynda has been a lifeguard and swim instructor since 2007 at the Berwick YMCA, and served as assistant aquatics director for 10 months before coming to Temple. After graduating from Widener, she also spent a season as a volunteer assistant track and field coach at Bloomsburg University, specializing in training rotational shot putters and discus throwers.

While at Widener, Szpynda was President of the Student Government Association her senior year, and had previously served as the Vice President of Finance and Administration. In May of 2014, she was given the President's Award, presented to a senior student who has contributed the most to campus life through scholarship and participation in extracurricular activities. Earning the award also gave Szpynda the opportunity to give the commencement speech. The award was one of many she earned for her campus involvement and academic achievements.

Szpynda will be working toward a master's degree in sport business while at Temple. She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting and economics with a 3.97 GPA, graduating summa cum laude.
