Margo Szabunia

Margo Szabunia joined the Temple fencing staff as a volunteer assistant coach beginning in the 2015-16 season. Szabunia, who previously worked with the team in the early 1980's, will coach the Owls' epee fencers.
Prior to earning her master's degree in American Social History from Temple in 1989, Szabunia spent three years as an assistant fencing coach under Nikki Franke. Szabunia was an All-American fencer for Penn, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in American Civilization in 1980.
Remaining active in the sport ever since her days at Penn, Szabunia made a return to competition in 2008 and took a silver medal in Vet-50 epee at the North American Cup in 2014. In 2008, Szabunia placed ninth in Vet-50 epee at the Veteran World Championships in France after taking the gold medal at the U.S. National Championships that same year.
As a senior fencer, among many other achievents, Szabunia was a six-time finalist in foil and epee at the U.S. National Championships. She was twice a U.S. Olympic Festival finalist as well as a two-time Orsi Trophy champion in 1984 and 1985.
