 Jose Lugo brings over 15 years of coaching experience to the Owls program. His experience started from the ground up, working the ranks of high school to junior college to DII and the DI levels.

In 2018, Lugo was hired as head women's volleyball coach at DII Newman University in Wichita, Kan. Lugo coached four all-conference selections in his four seasons, including Yemima Buana, Trinity Conley, Riley Daugherty, and Salome Romp. . In the classroom, Lugo had 16 student-athletes earn spots on the conference's Academic Honor Roll.

In the spring of 2019, Lugo was selected as an evaluator for the U.S. Women's National Team Tryouts. He served as one of the 16 evaluating coaches, 10 of which worked on Division I coaching staffs at the time.

Lugo has made four stops as an assistant at the Division I level before being hired at Newman.

He worked with setters and blockers from 2016 to 2017 at Fresno State and helped the Bulldogs finish the 2017 season with the 17th-most blocks per set in the nation.

Lugo returned to his alma mater Arizona State, serving as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2015-16 season with the indoor and beach programs. That year he assisted the indoor team to the 2015 NCAA tournament, and in the spring, he guided Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette to first-team All-Pac-12 honors.

At Grand Canyon State in 2014-15, Lugo worked with both the indoor and beach teams during tenure.

As an assistant on the Lopes indoor squad, Lugo worked alongside the 2014 WAC Freshman of the Year, Natalie Tardy, and All-WAC First Team, Shannon Dugan. Lugo guided Dugan and Mackenzie Phelps that spring to the 2015 AVCA Beach Volleyball Pairs Championship match and All-American honors.

Lugo spent the 2011-13 seasons with Dartmouth University as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator. His three-year stay was highlighted by a 16-9 overall record and an 8-6 record in the Ivy League in 2011.

In May 2010, Lugo was hired as the USA Volleyball Women's A2 National Teams director of operations. The squads took the gold and bronze medals at the 2010 USA Open National Tournament.

He got his feet wet at the collegiate level during 2006-07, when he was hired as an assistant at NJCAA's South Mountain Community College in Maricopa, Ariz. Lugo helped turn the program from a last-place finish in the 10-team AACAC conference to a fifth-place finish.

Before he arrived at SMCC, Lugo coached at Desert Mountain High School, helped lead the team to an Arizona State 5AA Championship.

He graduated from Arizona State in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Lugo is married to Rachel and the two have a son and daughter, Xavier and Layla.
