Rutgers Defeats Owls In Field Hockey

Piscataway, NJ (October 12, 1999) -- Five different Scarlet Knights

reached the back of the net as Rutgers University (7-6, 1-2)

defeated the Temple Owls (5-8), 5-1, at the Rutgers Stadium Complex

tonight.

Junior forward Meredith Pizzulli (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)

netted the first goal of the game at 12:20 in the first, with

senior Kristin Fawcett

(Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) on the assist. Sophomore

Andschana Mendes (Lebanon, NJ/Voorhees) set up senior Kelly Manna

(W. Long

Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) in front of the net as, she scored the

game-winner for Rutgers with just over ten minutes remaining in

the half of play.

Mendes added her 15th goal of the year, putting the Knights ahead

3-0, as she advanced into a second -place tie with former Scarlet

Knight Lisa LaValle

(1981-84) on the Rutgers all-time career goal scoring list. Senior

co-captain Karen Timko (Clinton, NJ/North Hunderton Regional)

tallied the final goal in

the first half with a little over a minute remaining.

The Owls stopped the Rutgers' shutout as Virginia Gonzales netted the

lone Owl goal. Junior back Becky Andrew (Battle, E. Sussex, UK) found

the back

of the net for the final Rutgers goal of the evening, off a penalty

corner, with assists from Mendes and Manna. With Mendes' fourth assist

of the season,

she moves into third place on the Rutgers all-time career scoring

leaders list.

Goalie Abby Joseph (Linwood, NJ/Mainland) recorded one save and reserve

net minder Meris Burton (Wilmington, DE/Hun School) saw ten minutes of

action in the victory. Temple goalie Serene McGrath made 12 saves on

the night. Rutgers outshot the Owls 22-2, with 17 of the Knights'

shot on goal

coming in the first half. The Knights also held the advantage in

penalty corners, 14-3.

The Scarlet Knight will face the number one ranked team in the nation,

the Connecticut Huskies, in a BIG EAST match-up at the Rutgers Stadium Complex,

on Saturday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m.
