AMHERST, Mass. (October 24) - Sophomore Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored two goals to

lead the University of Massachusetts to a 3-0 win over Temple University in collegiate field

hockey action Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title

for the Minutewomen, making them the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament

(Nov. 5-6). UMass is now 9-8 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the A-10, while Temple drops to

6-12 and 3-1 in the conference.

"We're very happy about winning the Atlantic 10," said Head Coach Patty Shea. "This is what

we've worked for this season. Two years ago, we finished second, and last year we tied for the

regular season title, so to go undefeated in the league and win the title is an important step forward

for us."

Both teams nearly went scoreless in the first half, before junior Tamra Geryk (Hatfield, Mass.)

scored with 26 seconds left in the frame to give UMass a 1-0 lead. Geryk got the goal in a penalty

corner situation when she deflected a shot by sophomore Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany)

into the net.

Defense again ruled the early part of the second half with UMass goaltender Zowie Tucker

(Neath, South Wales) making an acrobatic save off a shot by Temples's Juliann Leskiw midway

through the half to preserve UMass' lead.

Abbott scored the first of her two goals with 9:15 left in regulation to give UMass some insurance.

Abbott took a feed from senior Chrissy Millbauer (Easton, Conn.) from across the crease and

shot it in for the goal. Abbott added a second goal with just over two minutes remaining on a

penalty corner situation, scoring on a feed this time from junior Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.).

UMass starting goaltender Michelle Crooks (Feasterville, Pa.) and Tucker combined with four

saves for the shutout, while Temple's Serene McGrath made 10 stops.

The Minutewomen return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 26 when they host Dartmouth. Game time is

scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
