Philadelphia (October 5) -- The Temple field hockey team won its second straight
game with a 5-0 defeat of Ursinus at Geasey Field today. Five different
Owls scored in the game as Temple improved its record to 3-8.
The Owls jumped out to a 4-0 lead at half time. Virginia Gonzalez
(Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) started the scoring with a penalty corner
goal at 27:43. She was followed by a goal at 16:28 from Torie Russell
(Easton, Pa./Easton Area) who took advantage of ball deflected off the
goal keeper. Jessica Jaworski (Voorhees, N.J./Easton) scored at 13:01
and Juliann Leskiw (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) finished the first
period with a goal at 3:57. Walk-on Varinka Barbini (Flanders, N.J./Mt.
Olive) put the finishing touches on the win with a break away goal at
1:45 in the second period.
Goalies Serene McGrath (Cinnaminson, N.J./Little Flower) and April
Herman (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) combined to shut out the Golden
Bears. For McGrath it was her fifth career shutout after the Owls' 1-0
OT win over West Chester on Sept. 29.
