11.5.99 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 5) -- Sophomore sweeper Anke Bruemmer of the University of Massachusetts has been named the 1999 Atlantic 10 field hockey Player of the Year in voting conducting among the Conference's head coaches.

In that same vote, Brett Dymarczyk of St. Joseph's was tabbed Rookie of the Year and Massachusetts' Patty Shea was selected as Coach of the Year.

Bruemmer enters this weekend's Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship atop the Conference's scoring chart. The sophomore from Koeln, Germany has a league-best 15 goals to go with her Conference-high 32 points. The three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week is the first player since Temple's Jane Catanzaro (1988-90) to lead the Atlantic 10 in scoring in consecutive seasons. Aside from her scoring prowess, Bruemmer is a steady defender for the 11-8-0 Minutewomen who is called upon to mark the opponent's top attacker.

Joining Bruemmer on the All-Conference first-team are teammates Lucy Koch, Patty Robinson, and Zowie Tucker; Kelley Barnowski of Rhode Island; Pam Bilger, Donna Burke, and Siobhan Leavy of St. Joseph's; West Chester's Donna Polito; Heather Walker of Temple; and Jami Wilus of La Salle.

Dymarczyk earns Rookie of the Year laurels after garnering four Rookie of the Week citations over the course of the season. The forward from West Chester, PA ranks third in the Atlantic 10 with 24 points. Her 11 goals on the year are second only to Bruemmer and are the most by a freshman in St. Joseph's history, as well as the fifth highest total overall. Her steady play on the St. Joseph's attack enabled the Hawks to post an 11-7-0 record and earn the fourth seed in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship.

Shea earns Coach of the Year laurels for leading Massachusetts to back-to-back Atlantic 10 regular season titles - the first time that has happened since the Minutewomen won four straight from 1991-94. A 1984 UMass graduate, Shea leads her Minutewomen into this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship looking to record their fourth straight postseason title and third in three years under Shea. In those three years, Shea has posted a 38-26-0 record.
