Men's 1999-00 Basketball Schedule Features 10 NCAA and Two NIT Teams

PHILADELPHIA (August 30, 1999) -- Once again, Temple University men's basketball schedule is one of the nation's toughest. Head Coach John Chaney's Owls will face 10 NCAA Tournament teams and two NIT participants from the 1998-99 season.
The Owls open the season at The Forum of The Apollo of Temple against NCAA Sweet 16 participant Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 21. After a stop in Tallahassee, Fla. to play Florida State on Nov. 29, the Cherry and White will play a string of games against postseason tested opponents: at Wake Forest (NIT second round) on Dec. 4, NCAA Elite Eight participant Gonzaga in the Great Eight Tournament at Chicago's United Center on Dec. 8, and home at The Forum against Big Five and BIG EAST rival Villanova on Dec. 15 (NCAA first round).
The schedule features a number of other NCAA Tournament opponents: a Dec. 29 appearance at Wisconsin (NCAA first round), Big Five and cross-town rival Pennsylvania (NCAA first round) on Jan. 20, NCAA Sweet 16 participant Maryland on Feb. 13, and NCAA second round challenger Cincinnati on Feb. 20.
The Owls open Atlantic 10 play at home against NCAA first round and Atlantic 10 Tournament Champion Rhode Island on Jan. 5. Xavier, which advanced to the NIT semifinals and finished third, comes to The Forum on Jan. 25. The Owls will wrap up the regular season at The Smith Center against George Washington (NCAA first round) on March 4.
Temple will also play a full Big Five slate. In addition to the home contests with Villanova and Penn, the Owls will also count their Jan. 8 game at St. Joseph's and their Jan. 18 contest at La Salle in the Big Five standings. It is the first time since 1990-91 that the Big Five is playing a full round robin schedule.
The Owls have a regular season Temple record seven appearances on ESPN in addition to three games on ESPN2, two on ABC and six- regionally televised games on A10 TV.
