Temple Extends Head Coach Chaney's Contract Through 2002

PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 6, 1999) -- Temple University Basketball Coach John Chaney's contract has been extended through March 31, 2002, it was announced today by Temple Athletic Director Dave O'Brien.

In making the announcement, O'Brien said: "The extension of Coach Chaney's contract through March 31, 2002 is a great source of pride for us. Coach Chaney exhibits both on and off the court the ideals of Temple University. As a great teacher and someone with unquestionable character, he is an inspirational leader for our student-athletes and sports fans across the country.

"Coach Chaney has helped bring national prominence not only to our basketball program, but to Temple University as well. We are thrilled that he will continue to lead our men's basketball program into the next century."

John Chaney has coached the Temple men's basketball program since 1982. This past season he became Temple's all-time winningest hoops coach and now has a record of 380-160 in 17 years with the Owls. Overall, Chaney has compiled a 605-219 mark in 27 years of collegiate coaching. Last season, Chaney led the Cherry and White to a 24-11 record, an Atlantic 10 East Division Championship and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight, the fourth in his Temple tenure.
