Temple Outlasts Penn 44-40

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Temple Coach John Chaney says his team wins ugly games, and there was no better proof than Thursday night's clash with

Penn.

Temple made only 16 of 53 shots (32 percent) and 3 of 20 freethrows to nip city rival Penn 44-40. The Quakers connected on 13 of 46 shots (27

percent) and committed 16 turnovers.

"We normally win ugly games, but I'd rather think my way out rather than fuss my way. Normally this time of year my team tends to show some

character," said John Chaney, the veteran coach who will be 68 on Friday.

"I told them this would not be a fluid game that the shots weren't going to come easily. This was a character game. This is our kind of game, ugly and

not many points, but we only had four turnovers," Chaney said.

Quincy Wadley scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including a crucial free throw with 17.6 seconds left. Mark Karcher added 12 points for

the Owls (11-4) while Michael Jordan had 13 for the Quakers (5-7).

Temple took its biggest lead of the game, 33-27, with 5:22 left, but a 3-point shot by David Klatsky brought Penn to 36-35 with 5:15 to go. After a

Wadley 10-footer gave the Owls a 41-38 advantage, Jordan hit two free-throws to bring Penn to 41-40 at the 1:57 mark.

Lamont Barnes, who had missed five of his previous seven free-throw attempts, made two foul shots with 38 seconds remaining to give the Owls a

43-40 advantage. After Penn's Ugonna Onyekwe missed a 3-point attempt with 18 seconds left, Wadley grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made

one of two attempts.

Temple made only five of its first 24 shots but finally took a 16-15 lead when Pepe Sanchez, who had missed his first six shots, hit a 3-pointer with

2:19 to go in the half. A Karcher jumper gave the Owls an 18-15 edge, but Matt Langel hit a trey to enable Penn to tie the score 18-18 at the half.

Chaney said he has a lot of respect for Penn and Coach Fran Dunphy.

"I think he is one of the best coaches in the country. When you play them, it's not a game where you can just come down and throw up the ball. His

kids always play well," Chaney said.

"They are such a good defensive basketball team that I'm not surprised by the poor shooting percentage. That's how tough it was to score," said

Dunphy.

Penn had defeated the Owls in overtime last season, snapping an 18-game losing streak to Temple, which now holds a 36-19 edge in the all-time

series. It was the fewest points Penn had in a game since Feb. 4, 1992, when they scored 40 in a loss to Princeton.
