(AP) - Mark Karcher had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Lamont Barnes had all 15 of his points in the second half as Temple broke open a close game and gained a 64-51 victory over St. Joseph's on Saturday.

After a 3-pointer by Frank Wilkins brought the Hawks to 33-31 with 13:41 left, the Owls (8-3 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) scored the next 13 points, capped by a four-point play by Quincy Wadley to open a 46-31 lead.

The advantage reached 18 when Wadley sank two free throws with 5:10 left. St. Joseph's (6-5, 1-1) got no closer than 13 after that. Wadley had 12 points and Pepe Sanchez added nine assists and six steals for the Owls, who have won six of their last seven games.

Marvin O'Conner had 14 points and Wilkins 12 for St. Joseph's, which was a dismal 17-for-53 (32 percent) from the field.

With the win, the owls have won the last 10 meetings with St. Joe's and Coach John Chaney is now a perfect 10-0 against St. Joe's Coach Phil Martelli.
