Men's Basketball Newcomer David Hawkins Declared Eligible

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman basketball player David Hawkins, a 6-4,
215-pound guard-forward from Washington, D.C., has been declared
eligible for competition in the 2000-01 season, it was announced today
by Head Coach John Chaney.
Hawkins, who originally signed a national letter of intent to attend
Tulane University, had been awaiting since the opening of the current
academic year the results of an appeal to gain immediate eligibility at
Temple. On Monday, that appeal was formally granted by the NLI Steering
Committee, in conjunction with a qualified release agreement from
officials at Tulane University.
A 2000 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C.,
Hawkins was an academic honors student as a prep. He played two seasons
of varsity basketball (junior and senior years) under head coach Carroll
Holmes at Archbishop Carroll, leading his team to a South District
Championship. Hawkins averaged 20 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and
was named the District of Columbia Player of the Year as a senior.
In his first two years of high school, Hawkins attended National
Christian Academy in Fort Washington, Maryland, where he played varsity
basketball under coach Jimmy Campbell. In his sophomore year, he was the
leading scorer in his region with a 30.0 points per game average.
