Field Hockey 2000 Review

The Temple field hockey team ended its 2000 season with a trip to the
Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Owls posted an 11-11 record in 2000 and
finished second in the Atlantic 10 Conference (4-1) for the second
straight year.
Junior Kacy Ziomek (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake-Lehman) led the team in
points with 21. She recorded seven goals and seven assists in 22 games.
Ziomek also added six defensive saves for the Owls and scored the
game-winning goal against Rhode Island. Senior Julie Martinez (Upper
Moreland, Pa./Upper Moreland) recorded 19 points (9 goals and 1 assist)
in 10 games for Temple. Martinez scored three game winning goals. Senior
Jessica Jaworski (Voorhees, N.J.) added 17 points (4 goals and 9
assists) and two game winning goals for the Cherry and White.
Senior Michelle Murawski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) added four
defensive saves for the Owls, while sophomore Emily Moyer (Dresher,
Pa./Upper Dublin) contributed five.
Senior goalkeeper Serene McGrath (Cinnaminson, N.J./Little Flower)
finished with 1.96 goals against average after playing 21 games for
Temple. She logged 1,247 minutes in the cage and recorded 163 saves.
Backup goal tender April Herman (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) saw
action in 11 games and logged 322 minutes with 48 saves.
Several Owls received Atlantic 10 Conference and National awards.
Seniors Michelle Murawski, Julie Martinez and junior Kacy Ziomek were
selected to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Tournament team. Murawski was
named to the Atlantic 10 All- Conference team, while freshman Haley
Dervinis (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was selected as the
Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. Dervinis garnered three Rookie of the
Week citations over the course of the season. Also receiving Rookie of
the Week citations during the season were Bridget Moyer (Reinholds,
Pa./Schuylkill Valley), Susan Nase (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township), and
Rachel Kasper (Hunlock Creek, Pa./Lake-Lehman). Murawski was named
Player of the Week. She was also named to the 2000 Astro Turf/NFHCA
Division I Regional All-American first team for the Mid-Atlantic Region.
McGrath was named to the second team.
Six Owls started all 22 games, including Kacy Ziomek, junior Juliann
Leskiw (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin), seniors Michelle Murawski, Jill
Polmateer (St. Johnsville, N.Y./Johnstown), Jessica Jaworski and
sophomore Emily Moyer.
The Owls faced six nationally ranked squads during Head Coach Lauren
Fuch's eighth season. Fuchs returns all but six players for the 2001
season. Graduating seniors include Laura Bergey, Martinez, McGrath,
Murawski, Jaworski and Polmateer.
