Field Hockey Defeats Rhode Island in 3OT, 4-3

(Nov. 4) - It took two overtime periods and penalty strokes for Temple University to defeat Rhode Island, 4-3, in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championships this afternoon, November 4 at Garber Field. Temple advances to the finals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m.

Rhode Island's Jessica Weber (Folsom, N.J.) opened the scoring when she scored
off a pass from Marci Bourski (East Greenwich, R.I.) at the 29:40 mark. The
Rams held a 1-0 lead entering half time.
In the second half, Temple senior Julie Martinez (Upper Moreland, Pa./Upper
Moreland) tied the score at 1-1 with her unassisted goal at the 28:18 mark.
Rhode Island took the lead back (2-1) with a goal by Atlantic 10 Player of
the Year, Kelly Barnowski (Southwick, Mass.), assisted by Elizabeth Bernard
(Woonsocket, R.I.) at 20:03. Temple's Kacy Ziomek (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake
Lehman) scored two goals, both assisted by Haley Dervinis (Larksville,
Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and Jessica Jaworski (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern), to put
the Owls ahead. Her first goal at the 10:39 mark tied the game at two, while
her second gave Temple a 3-2 lead.
With no time remaining on the game clock, Rhode Island's Devon Stecker
(Saylorsburg, Pa.) scored on a corner assisted by Tara Palazzo (East
Greenwich, R.I.) to force overtime.
After two scoreless overtime periods, Temple defeated Rhode Island in penalty
strokes, 5-4.
Rhode Island goalie, Danielle Dangoia (Bridgewater, Mass.) made 12 saves while
Serene McGrath (Cinnaminson, N.J./Little Flower) stopped seven for Temple.
