Temple Nearly Sweeps Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Awards
3.7.00 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Temple senior point guard Pepe Sanchez has been named
Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in voting
conducted among the Conference's head coaches.
Teammate Lynn Greer was named the Atlantic 10's Sixth Man of the Year, while
the Owls' head coach John Chaney was tabbed Coach of the Year. In addition,
SirValiant Brown of George Washington was named the Rookie of the Year and
Fordham's Duke Freeman-McKamey garnered the Chris Daniels Award as the
Conference's most improved player.
There is no clearer evidence of Sanchez's value to the Owls than this: when
he missed eight games with an injury, Temple was 5-3. With him, the Owls
were 18-2. Sanchez, who does not appear among the Atlantic 10's leaders due
to the 75% requirement, still has more assists than anyone in the league
with 166 and his 70 steals rank fourth among Atlantic 10 players. Sanchez
enters the Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10 Championship averaging 6.3 ppg and is
second on the Owls with a 5.6 rpg average. In addition to being named Player
of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year - a first in Atlantic 10
history - Sanchez is also the league's Student-Athlete of the Year in men's
basketball. Sanchez holds a 3.29 gpa in history. He is also the ninth Temple
player to be named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.
Brown earns Rookie of the Year laurels for leading the Atlantic 10 in
scoring the entire season. Brown averages 24.3 ppg and ranks second in the
nation in that category. The freshman has had perfect balance, making 214
field goals and 206 free throws. Should he end the season atop the Atlantic
10 scoring chart, he will be the third freshman in four years the lead the
Atlantic 10 in scoring. Brown also earns a spot on the All-Conference
second-team.
Freeman-McKamey is the second Fordham player in as many years to earn the
Chris Daniels Award. The sophomore, who averaged 3.0 ppg and 2.5 rpg a year
ago, improved those numbers to 11.2 ppg and 8.1 rpg, the latter figure
placing him third in the Conference. Last year, Alejandro Olivares won the
Daniels Award.
Greer is Temple's instant offense off the bench. After missing most of last
year with an eye injury, Greer came back to average 12.8 ppg - second on the
Owls. He is second to Sanchez with 58 assists and he also has 32 steals. His
42.0% field goal percentage is best among Temple's guards.
Chaney garners his fifth Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year award, but first
since 1987-88. The Owls' mentor led Temple to a 14-2 Atlantic 10 record -
the best mark in the league since 1995-96 when Massachusetts went 15-1.
Temple's two losses in the league were by one point to St. Bonaventure and
three points to St. Joseph's. The Owls enter the Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10
Championship with a 23-5 record, their most wins since going 23-8 in
1993-94. In 18 years at Temple, Chaney is 403-165, while holding a 28-year
career mark of 628-224.
