Temple Releases 2000-01 Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules

9.13.00 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The schedules for both the Temple University men's and women's basketball teams for the 2000-01 season are herein made available to the public on an official basis. Please note that game dates and starting times remain subject to change. Each of the 27-game regular-season schedules begin with two exhibition contests, highlighted by a men's and women's doubleheader at the 10,206-seat Temple University Liacouras Center on Nov. 8.

The men will officially open Head Coach John Chaney's 19th season at Temple on Nov. 13, hosting Delaware in a first-round game of the Pre-season National Invitation Tournament. Potential advancement dates for the 16-team, single-elimination competition are Nov. 15, 22 and 24. Under new Head Coach Dawn Staley, the lady Owls officially tip off the campaign with back-to-back home games against Lehigh (Nov. 17) and Marist (Nov. 21).

In a typically rugged men's schedule, the Owls face no less than six qualifiers for the 2000 NCAA Tournament, including Wisconsin (Final Four), Duke (Elite Eight) and Cincinnati (second round); A-10 Conference foes Dayton and St. Bonaventure; and Philadelphia Big Five rival Pennsylvania. In addition, the slate includes 2000 NIT champion Wake Forest and five additional NIT participants, including A-10 members Xavier and Massachusetts, Villanova, Penn State and Delaware. The non-conference home slate features an encounter of major national interest when the Duke Blue Devils meet the Owls at the First Union Center in Philadelphia Dec. 2. The Owls will also host Wisconsin (Dec. 14), Wake Forest (Dec. 21), Cleveland State (Dec. 23) and Cincinnati (Jan. 20) at the Liacouras Center.

The women's schedule features five NCAA Tournament teams, including Vanderbilt, North Carolina State and Atlantic 10 Conference foes Xavier, George Washington and St. Joseph's. Of those, Xavier, St. Joe's and GW will visit the Liacouras Center on Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9, respectively. Coach Staley's club will participate in a Philadelphia Big 5 doubleheader versus Penn at St. Joseph's on Dec. 9 (St. Joe's hosts Villanova in the second game). The Owls also visit the famed "Pit" of New Mexico State for the Lady Lobo Classic, with a field including New Mexico, Boise State and Western Illinois.
