OWLS SPOIL RHODE ISLAND HOMECOMING WITH 2-0 VICTORY

Senior midfielder Virginia Gonzalez (Reading Pa./Twin Valley) scored early in the second half and again in the closing minutes Saturday as Temple spoiled homecoming at Rhode Island with a 2-0 victory in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The win lifts Temple record to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the A-10.

Temple jumped back into the hunt for one of the four Atlantic 10 playoff berths, while Rhode Island (4-11,1-3) found itself in danger of missing the playoffs for only the second time in seven years.

Gonzalez converted on a penalty corner to break a scoreless tie 4:19 into the second half,taking a pass on the left side from stopper Haley Dervinis (Larksville,Pa./WyomingValley West) scorching a shot in from 13 yards. Gonzalez iced the win for the Owls on a breakaway with 3:22 remaining,scoring from eight yards out on a perfect feed from sophomore Julianne Leskiw (Wilkes- Barre, Pa./Coughlin).

Senior April Herman (Lancaster,Pa/Conestoga Valley) needed four saves to record the shutout.

The Owls (7-9.1-2) will host LaSalle on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Geasey Field.
