GREER'S CAREER NIGHT PROPELS TEMPLE TO DOUBLE OT WIN IN WISCONSIN

12.4.01 | Men's Basketball

Lynn Greer's career high 47 points

single-handedly lifted Temple (3-2, 0-0) to an improbable 70-67 road win over Wisconsin (2-5, 0-0) in a non-conference battle in Madison, Wisconsin.

Greer's effort erased several Kohl Center records. He now holds the record for most points scored (47) in a game, most field goals (18) made and most field goals attemted (38). If the phrase, "Big time players step up in big time games" is the case, Greer's effort certainly puts him in that category.

With Kevin Lyde in street clothes nursing an ankle sprain, center Ron Rollerson picked up two fouls in the first three minutes of the game forcing John Chaney to go with a four-guard rotation.

The Owls defense held the Badgers without a field goal for 9:47 of the first half as Greer scored 18 first-half points to give the Owls a 31-20 advantage at the half.

The Owls looked to have things under control, leading 39-28 with 14 minutes left in the game. But the visitors themselves went cold, as Wisconsin took their first lead of the game after holding Temple scoreless for 8:45. A free throw by Mike Wilkinson gave the Badgers a 43-42 lead with 3:01 remaining. Wisconsin looked to have the game in hand, leading 52-47 with just 1:02 remaining. From there, the Owls used two 30-second timeouts to their advantage as Alex Wesby and Greer converted 3-point field goals out of the timeouts to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, two free throws by Wilkinson gave the Badgers a 60-57 lead but Greer nailed a three with just six-tenths of a second remaining to send the game into double overtime.

The Badgers would take a 65-62 lead with 2:43 left but the Owls chipped away and two free throws by Greer coupled by one from sophomore Brian Polk gave the Owls a lead they would never relinguish.

Along with his career high, Greer also broke several individual records. He set career highs in field goals (18) in a game, field goals attempted (38), 3-point field goals attempted (16) and minutes played (50). His 47 points are the most points scored by a Division I player this year.
