Chaney Among Seven Coaching Finalists For Basketball Hall Of Fame

PHILADELPHIA (March 28) - Temple men's basketball coach John Chaney

has been named a finalist for enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial

Basketball Hall of Fame, it was announced March 28.

There are 17 finalists in all and Chaney joins a list of seven who are from the coaching ranks, including Larry Brown, Mike Krzyzewski, Lute Olson, Jerry Tarkanian, Cathy Rush and Kay Yow. An individual needs 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election. The new electees will be named during the week of May 22-26. The 2001 Enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 5, 2001 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Coach Chaney has patrolled the sidelines for a total of 29 years, the last 19 at Temple. He has amassed 653 total wins in his career and won the 1978 Division II National Championship while at Cheyney State University when he was named the Division II National Coach of the Year. Chaney has led the Temple Owls to the NCAA Tournament in 17 of his 19 seasons and reached the regional finals five times. During Chaney's tenure, Temple has won six Atlantic 10 Conference crowns and he has been named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year five times and Division I National Coach of the Year twice.
