Greer Helps Team USA Stay Unbeaten

Temple's Lynn Greer chipped in with 14 points as the United States beat
Turkey, 113-90, to finish unbeaten in the 2001 preliminary round of the
World University Games in Beijing, China. The U.S. closed out the first
round at the top of Group B and will advance to the medal Quarterfinal Group
K round to play three games (Aug. 26-28) against South Korea (1-1) and two
other opponents yet to be determined. The top team from Group K will then
advance to the medal semifinals scheduled for August 30 and the finals will
be contested on August 31.
Once again team USA jumped out early and led 29-20 at the end of the first
quarter. Following a jumper by Turkey six seconds into the second quarter,
the United States scored eight uncontested points, which came from four
different players, to pull away 37-22 with 7:33 left in the half. Turkey
never got closer than 14 points and the USA closed the half with a 20-point,
59-39 advantage.
"First of all I want to say I'm happy we won, but I felt we could've played
a lot better defense," said Greer, who was 5-for-7 from the field in 22
minutes of play.
With the win, the U.S. improved its winning streak at the World University
Games to 43, dating back to 1989.
In other preliminary round action, South Korea defeated Mexico 89-78 to
take the second spot in Group D and will face the United States in the
quarterfinal round. The remainder of today's games will determine the United
States's quarterfinals round opponents.
