8.27.01 | Men's Basketball

Temple's Lynn Greer combined with Juan Dixon (Maryland) and Lonny Baxter (Maryland) for 14 steals and 47 points lifting team USA (4-0) to a 99-67 victory over Brazil (1-2) in the first game of the 2001 World University Games medal quarterfinal round in Beijing, China.

The United States, placed in quarterfinals Group K, along with Brazil, Great Britain (3-0) and South Korea (1-2), will continue play on August 27 against Great Britain at 9:00 p.m. (all times local) and will close the quarterfinals round against South Korea on August 28 at 7:00 p.m. The top team from Group K will then advance to the medal semifinals scheduled for August 30 and the finals will contested on August 31.

"We're playing better together," said Greer who has scored in double figures in all four contests thus far. "We weren't playing the way we should

have been playing today. If we're going to step up on any aspect, it has to be on the defensive end. We've always been good, but we're getting better. Coach Dunn is mixing the lineups up, so he's trying to play everybody, but I think we've always played well together."

With Baxter contributing 20 points, Greer 15 and Dixon 12, the United States shot 50.7 percent from the field, while holding Brazil to just 34.3 percent from the field. The U.S. won the battle on the boards 41-31 and forced 25 Brazilian turnovers, 20 of which were U.S. steals. Additionally, the United States received 18 fast break points, while Brazil managed only two.
