1.8.02 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA-- Paul Rubincam, the Executive Director of the Philadelphia

Big 5, announced today the newest members of the legendary organization's Hall of Fame

today, including all-time Temple greats Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie.

Jones and McKie will be joined in the 2002 class by La Salle's Chrissie Donahue,

Saint Joseph's Amy Mallon, Penn's Bob Weinhauer and Jack Scheuer of the

Associated Press. The new inductees will be honored on Friday, Jan. 25 at the annual Big 5

Hall of Fame luncheon, and then again at the Penn-St. Joseph's men's

basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 26. Both events will take place at The

Palestra.

Jones was the 10th selection in the 1994 NBA draft by the Los

Angeles Lakers after a stellar career with the Temple Owls. Jones helped

the Owls to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including a loss

to No. 1 Michigan in the West Region final (77-72) in 1994. Jones was an

Associated Press honorable mention All-American in 1994 after averaging

19.5 points per game, and was a two-time All-Big 5 honoree in his junior

and senior years. He was also the first Temple player to record 100

assists and 100 blocked shots in a career and still stands 14th all-time in

career scoring at Temple with 1,470 points. Jones currently plays for the

Miami Heat.

McKie, presently with the Philadelphia 76ers, was a third-team All-American in 1993 and was also named Philadelphia Big 5 and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year that same

season. A three-time All-Big 5 honoree and Big 5 Rookie of the Year in

1988-89, McKie was the No. 17 pick in the NBA draft in 1994 by the

Portland Trailblazers after finishing his collegiate career with the Owls

tied for sixth on Temple's all-time scoring list with 1,650 points.

La Salle's Chrissie Donahue is being inducted to the Hall of Fame in just

her first year of eligibility. Donahue starred for the Explorers from

1994-97 and was a three-year first-team All-Big 5 honoree. She finished

her career second all-time in scoring at La Salle with 1,818 points and is

third on the career rebounding list (914) and all-time assist list

(225). She is also first at La Salle in career free throws (581) and third

in free throw percentage (79.9). Donahue was named Philadelphia Big 5

Player of the Year in 1995. Donahue currently serves as an assistant coach

at La Salle.

Amy Mallon is the latest Saint Joseph's Hawk to be inducted into the Hall

of Fame. Mallon earned Big 5 Player of the Year honors in 1993 after being

named Big 5 Player of the Week four times during the season and leading the

Hawks to the 1993 Big 5 championship (4-0). She also earned first-team

All-Big 5 honors and was an honorable mention All-American. Mallon

finished her career with 1,384 points, which included three seasons at the

University of Richmond. After graduation from Saint Joseph's, Mallon went

on to play for the Philadelphia Rage in the ABL. Currently, she is the

head varsity girls' coach at Episcopal Academy.

Bob Weinhauer spent five seasons at the helm of the Penn men's basketball

program, where he compiled a 99-45 overall record. Weinhauer's .688

winning percentage included two 20-win seasons and a 25-win campaign in

1978-79. Weinhauer also led the Red and Blue to five consecutive

post-season tournament appearances which included four NCAA tournament

berths, one trip to the NIT, four Ivy League Championships, one Ivy

co-title, two Big Five co-crowns and a 62-10 record against Ivy League

opponents. During 1978-79, Weinhauer was named Eastern Coach of the Year

after leading the Quakers to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament with

victories over Iona, No. 2-ranked North Carolina, No. 10 Syracuse and

top-20 St. John's.

Last, but certainly not least, long-time Associated Press reporter Jack

Scheuer will be inducted into this year's class of the Big 5 Hall of

Fame. Scheuer has covered approximately 2000 Philadelphia Big 5 games, and

also reports on the Philadelphia 76ers and the Phillies. Prior to his

start at the AP in 1972, Scheuer worked part time for the Evening Bulletin

assisting various writers who covered the Big 5. Scheuer has served as

president of the Herb Goode Basketball Club since 1990 and is a current

member of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Sports Writers

Association.
