TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS UMASS 3-2 ON SENIORS DAY

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple field hockey team defeated UMass 3-2 in a must win Atlantic 10 Conference game on Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. Owls freshman Melissa Fritze (Piscataway, NJ. /Pisacataway) scored the game-winning goal, her first goal of her career with 8:18 remaining.

Juniors Haley Dervinis (Larksville, Pa. /Wyoming Valley West) and Rachel Kasper (Hunlock Creek, Pa./Lake Lehman) had two assists each. Temple raised its record to 9-8 and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 and vastly improved its chances of making the Atlantic 10 Conference postseason. The Minutewomen's record dropped to 3-15 and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10.

The Owls' leading scorer Melissa DeCesaris (Shavertown, Pa./ Lake Lehman) scored on an assist from juniors Dervinis and Kasper tying the score at 1-1. Temple junior Morgan Faria (South Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) gave the Owls a brief 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal with 14:50 remaining in the game. Owls' goalie Erin Conroy (Centereach, NY, / Centereach) had one save and improved her record to 7-7 overall.

UMass' Erika Whiston scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Stacy Blue. The Minutewomen's second goal was scored by Adrianne Monaco on an assist from Sue Jackson which tied the game at 2-2 with 11:52 remaining in the contest. UMass' goalie Ashley Egland had nine saves.

Temple (9-8, 1-2) will visit West Chester in a key Atlantic 10 match up on Thursday, October 31 at 3:30 p.m. Temple will travel to Saint Joseph's in its final game of the season on November 2.
