TEMPLE'S 2-1 DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF WEST CHESTER ENDS OWLS SEASON

11.4.02 | Field Hockey

Temple's field hockey program was eliminated from postseason play this afternoon as West Chester ended the Owls season with a 2-1 victory at West Chester.

The Owls (9-10, 2-4) were looking to get redemption on West Chester (9-9, 4-2), who also knocked the Owls out of postseason contention last year. But the Golden Rams came out and got on the scoreboard early as Mariel Tomas scored on an unassisted goal just 8:19 into the game, giving the home squad a 1-0 lead. The Owls came back and tied the contest when Rachel Kasper scored on a penalty shot. The first half was evenly played as both teams had six shots on goal. The Owls, however, had six more penalty corners than the Golden Rams but could not convert. West Chester took the lead for good at the 36:39 mark of the second half on an unassisted goal by Kate Randle. Both goalies played solidly in goal. Temple's Erin Conroy stopped 10 of 12 shots while West Chester goalie, Carrie Hanshue, stopped 10 of 11 Temple shots.

West Chester will now play UMass on Friday in one semi-final game of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, while the loss by Temple eliminates the Owls from post-season play. The tournament will be hosted by Richmond, the number one seed, who will host Saint Joseph's, the number four seed.
